It wasn't "bad", but it also wasn't really remarkable. Still, kid horror == yay. Every-page art was nice. ( )

In the book, our main character Sam gets the hall monitor duty. He feels like it's not only his duty to be hall monitor, but to protect the school, and warn the students when the school is going to make it's attack. There's a school play coming up, so Sam teams up with some friends to help him with the school. ( )

Fun, picture-filled pages, perfect to read to pre-schoolers/Kindergarteners/First Graders.

THE SCHOOL IS ALIVE (Eerie Elementary #1) by Jack Chabert, is an early reader with black and white illustrations throughout. My 5-year-old loves illustrated books about kids, and the quirky title/cover of this book caught his eye and the creepy story line held his attention.

Sam Graves and his two friends, Lucy & Antonio, are students at Eerie Elementary School, where Sam discovers the school is trying to eat the students. As Hall Monitor, it's up to Sam to fight the school and save the students. In this installment, during the class play, the stage and props come to life and try to swallow the students.

I read this book to my 5-year-old son, who loved looking at the pictures as I read. Though this is marketed as a book for newly independent young readers, I saw more than a few large words that might be too advanced for a young reader. But as a book read out loud to a pre-schooler, it was perfect. The chapters are numbered with digits, which made my son happy that he could "read" which chapter we were about to start. The print is large enough to point out some sight words for him too.

I'd recommend this book for parents who like to read to their pre-schoolers/kindergardeners/first graders, and especially for kids who like adventure and won't be scared by a dark tale with a student-eating villain.

Sam is elected to be the new hall monitor at the school - he is not excited at first, but the sash seems to give him the ability to see that the school is coming alive. First the sand tries to swallow him, then the hallways go crazy...the janitor tells him that the school is alive and it is up to him to keep everyone safe. With the school show coming up, Sam has to be on the lookout.

Perfect "scary" book for younger readers. Just enough to make them feel like a fantastic reader and love the creepy story, but not so much that I would worry about nightmares. ( )

I got this book for my son to read back when he was starting beginning chapter books. Unfortunately (or fortunately) he moved through beginning chapter books phase very quickly and is now on to series like the Spirit Animals and Wings of Fire. So this book sat around for a bit until he picked it up last night and quickly read it (he is 8 years old and it took him maybe 30 min to read). Then he gave it to me to read (it took me about 10 minutes to read). That being said this was a very short read that would be perfect for those kids who are starting to read beginning chapter books.

The story is about a boy named Sam Graves who is forced to be a dreaded Hall Monitor. However during his first stent as Hall Monitor he finds out that Eerie Elementary is a much scarier place than he originally thought...in fact it may be alive.

This was a somewhat creepy story. Sam is tasked with defending his classmates against this evil and living school. The ideas are a bit creepy but I never thought it got too scary. My son said that the book “Kinda’ freaked me out” but he (like his mother) has a great imagination and, as a result, a low tolerance for creepiness.

The pictures throughout the book are excellent, they add a lot to the story and are really well done. The story overall is creepy and cute; I enjoyed it.

Overall this a cute and creepy beginning chapter book with some wonderful pictures. I think it would be a perfect read for kids just starting to read beginning chapter books who enjoy creepy horror-type scary stories. It’s not super scary but it definitely is creepy. ( )
