Starts kind of slow, but the second half is great. ( )

A fun YA fantasy adventure with great shades of later-generation race issues. Elliott describes this as "Little Women meets American Ninja Warrior" and that's a good summary of the setup. It's a pacey plot with an interesting world that's well explored (for a YA fantasy) but still has lots of intriguing mystery in the details to discover, and there's great thematic layering. (All this is what you expect with an author as experienced as Elliott. But sometimes the wheels come off when switching age categories.) I mean, I'm pretty sure that's even the burgeoning start of a love triangle I see before me, and yet it's being done really well; the relationships make sense, the characters are strong, and it reflects elements of our heroine that are in conflict.

Basically, I enjoyed it, and want to read more. ( )

I really should have learned by now; whenever a book is billed as "the next Hunger Games," the chances are extremely high that I am going to end up very disappointed. This book, unfortunately, was no exception.

I think my biggest problem with this book is that it was so incredibly boring. I never got involved in the story in the least, and even when Major Things were happening, I really didn't care. For example, when Jes' father chooses his career over his family and basically throws them to the wolves, I suppose that I was meant to feel something. But I didn't. I mean, it's a major turning point in the book, but...meh. That feeling never left me throughout the entire book, and it's damned torture to read a book when you have absolutely no investment in it. Therefore, I feel like I can be excused for only skimming over the last half of the book. ;)

Jes was a fairly unlikable character; she was forced to grow up quite a bit after the first hundred pages or so, but I still never cared for her. The romance felt flat and uninspired to me. The whole Court of Fives thing felt weird. The author tried to explain the five trials a few different times, and I must admit that I still don't exactly have a good mental picture of what these five trials are supposed to entail, probably because I found the descriptions so boring.

I feel like the book was probably meant for a younger (tween) audience, but I really don't know if it would hit the mark with that age group, either.

The book was pitched as more of a high fantasy, but I never quite got that, either. Sure, there's a bit of magic sprinkled throughout, but not enough for it to be "high fantasy" in my mind.

As for me, I ended up with a big ol' ball of meh when it comes to this book. I won't be continuing the series. ( )

Kate Elliot has gone YA. At least the worlds is complex in believable ways and class and race have a interesting dynamic. The magic is illusive but real and strange things have happened and are set up before our eyes. But as much better as this is to any other girl-power book I don’t think it will be the one to catch on. It lacks the Victorian flavored wild romanticism of the Cold series. But, KE does manage to work in almost plausible ritual games without wholesale slaughter - I’m pretty sure Jes hasn’t actually killed anyone by the end of the book, and has instead saved some lives. An inverted re-creation of Alexandria with a strange Egypto Greek overclass.
----
It certainly held up to a second reading. I think I enjoyed it more since I didn’t have to adjust to the world as abruptly. The scenes of the Tomb rescue were haunting me, but rolled up in a still unremembered city of the dead sequence. ( )

From School Library Journal

Set in an ancient civilization reminiscent of the Egyptians and the Mayans, this is a high fantasy novel that explores race, class, and gender struggles in a patriarchal society. Jessamy is the daughter of a Patron general and a Commoner mother. Even though her parents' union is illegal, Jessamy is brought up with the wealth and privilege of the Patron class. However, that privilege comes at the price of her own independence. The heroine cannot publicly compete in the Fives, a prestigious athletic competition, so she trains in secret. Then her father comes home unexpectedly from battle and the family is given the honor of attending a Fives game. Jessamy competes, but even masked, her identity is revealed. Her family quickly comes under the scrutiny of the deceptive Lord Gargaron who breaks apart the teen's family, even arranging a new marriage for her father. The protagonist is then sent to a Fives training camp while her pregnant mother and sisters are imprisoned. Jessamy seeks help from Lord Gargaron's nephew, a kind nobleman of Patron birth and a Fives competitor. Together, they risk their lives to save Jessamy's family. Elliott has created a world of warring kingdoms where the victors have built their civilization on the backs of the conquered. Jessamy is a loyal and strong female protagonist who fights against injustice. VERDICT This trilogy opener will be a hit with readers who love action-packed fantasy adventures.—Kimberly Garnick Giarratano, Rockaway Township Public Library, NJ
