This was a fairly quick and easy read, but I had some problems with it. Kat's anger has been simmering and exploding for three years since her mother died and the adults who could have resolved the situation have been keeping secrets from her, thus prolonging her suffering and uncertainty. Talk about cruel and unusual punishment! The plot feels very contrived and unrealistic and the whole novel reads very young for a YA book. Not a fan. 2.5 stars This book was a very easy read but not a very good one. Kat, the main protagonist, suffers from grief, loneliness and betrayal but, I must say, she wasn't very likeable. I found her to be very self-absorbed, selfish and moody, so I never really connected with her. On the other hand, I loved Hercules, her dog. He was ungainly, ugly, loyal and a delight, and brought lighter moments to the novel. The ending was contrived and too convenient to be believable, so while the book started well, the plot lacked pace and the plot fell in a heap by the end. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

If you like Fiona Wood, Cath Crowley or Jaclyn Moriarty, you'll love Christine Bongers' gripping new coming of age story, Intruder. I don't walk past the house next door. I wish the woman who lives in it was dead. Which makes it hard . . . because she was the one who came running when I screamed. Kat Jones is woken by an intruder looming over her bed. She's saved by Edwina - the neighbour Kat believes betrayed her dying mother. Her dad issues an ultimatum. Either spend nights next door, or accept another intruder in her life - Hercules, the world's ugliest guard dog. It's a no-brainer, even for dog-phobic Kat. When she meets adorkable Al at the dog park, finally Kat has someone to talk to, someone who cares. But the prowler isn't finished with Kat. To stop him, she needs Edwina's help . . . and what Kat learns could mend fences - or break her fragile family apart forever. Her father has to work in a band most nights, so Kat is often left alone in the house, and of course, she can't tell anyone or the dad might get into trouble with Child Welfare.
So now an intruder has made his presence known, what is she to do? She can't go to Edwina or the police. The solution presents itself in the form of a guard dog Hercules. Kat takes Hercules to the local dog park and meets a local boy called Al who offers to help her.
Suspenseful story set in a small town with adorable characters at the dog park, who all want to help Kat catch the bad guy, who has escalated his crimes to ringing her at home at night and even poisoning the dog! ( )
