"The 16th Amendment to the Constitution legalized federal income tax, but what if there were problems with the 1913 ratification of that amendment? Problems that call into question decades of tax collecting, and could even bring down the US economy. There is a surprising truth to this possibility a truth wholly entertained by Steve Berry, a top-ten New York Times bestselling writer, in his new thriller, The Patriot Threat. His protagonist, Cotton Malone, once a member of an elite intelligence division within the Justice Department known as the Magellan Billet, is now retired. But when his former boss, Stephanie Nelle, asks him to track a rogue North Korean who may have acquired some top secret Treasury Department files the kind that could bring the United States to its knees. Malone is vaulted into a harrowing twenty-four-hour chase that begins on the water in Venice and ends in the remote highlands of Croatia. With appearances by Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, and a curious painting that still hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Steve Berry's trademark mix of history and suspense is 90% fact and 10% exciting speculation, a provocative thriller that poses a dangerous question. What if the federal income tax is illegal?"--Publisher.… (mer)

The Patriot Threat is a book about stolen papers regarding the 16th Amendment that Congress has the right to levy an income tax without apportioning it among the states. It was difficult to follow the characters who was on what side. Too many people and countries fighting over the found paperwork. Clearly a lot of research went into this book but still it was confusing. ( )

FROM AMAZON: The 16th Amendment to the Constitution is why Americans pay income taxes. But what if there were problems associated with that amendment? Secrets that call into question decades of tax collecting? In fact, there is a surprising truth to this hidden possibility.

Cotton Malone, once a member of an elite intelligence division within the Justice Department known as the Magellan Billet, is now retired and owns an old bookshop in Denmark. But when his former-boss, Stephanie Nelle, asks him to track a rogue North Korean who may have acquired some top secret Treasury Department files--the kind that could bring the United States to its knees--Malone is vaulted into a harrowing twenty-four hour chase that begins on the canals in Venice and ends in the remote highlands of Croatia.

With appearances by Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, a curious painting that still hangs in the National Gallery of Art, and some eye-opening revelations from the $1 bill, this riveting, non-stop adventure is trademark Steve Berry--90% historical fact, 10% exciting speculation--a provocative thriller posing a dangerous question: What if the Federal income tax is illegal?

This book offers an interesting dilemma. What if there were some problems with the 16th Amendment? However, I felt that the story was pretty slow compared to previous books I've read in this series. I even liked the side story with Stephanie Nelle better than the story with Cotton Malone. I just found the Big Bad Guy, the North Korean dude to be a pretty boring nemesis. And Cotton's hunt for him and his daughter didn't rock my boat. I do love adventures thrillers with clues to be solved and that part of the book did I enjoy. I just hope that the next book will be better... ( )

I listened to the unabridged version of this book and at the end of many chapters the author pops up and tells you things about that chapter. He was on a train in England and got the idea. This person won a charity auction and got her name in the book. This was not helpful. I like the author to explain things at the end of the book, that way I can either read it or not ( )
