It's not often that I sit down and read a book in less than 24 hours, but damn this book is so charmingly endearing and engaging that I didn't want to put it down at all! But I'm getting ahead of myself already! Technically I cheated and watched the movie adaptation of this book first (the charming trailer and Nick Robinson's acting skills had me at hello), but as soon as the film finished I desperately wanted to read the book. Not so desperate that I went out and bought it (I've been burned too many times for that), but rushed to the library - who didn't have it . Skip to now (months and months later) I finally go a copy, and I waited (im)patiently to crack it until my other books were finished. Which was last night, after some crushing of the last 100 pages of two other books in a day. From the get go I was absolutely hooked by the characters (who matched the film wonderfully) and specifically Simon's infectious and oddball sense of humour. Even though it's been many years since my highschool experience and I can't fully comprehend the increased sense of questioning and complication that LGBTQ teens must face, I felt that Simon's experience is extremely relatable from its vulnerability, honesty, and humanity. I mean, he's only a fictional character, but his expression feels so real through Albertalli's storytelling that you come out at the end of the story feeling like you learned something and made a new friend. The world needs more Simons, so I hope that everyone who reads this book (and sees the film) gains some hope for their own lives and in turn gives love and compassion back to the rest of the world. ( ![]() This book gives many good points. 4.5 stars This is a well-written teen book. I'm an adult and loved it. There are many great characters. The lead is easy to love and understand. It ends in an uplifting way and doesn't get too down during any part. Nothing felt too cliché to me either. I recommend it. This book was lovely and charming and all good things. From the characters to the dialogue, I found the entire thing delightful. Recommended for fans of YA who enjoy wit and happiness. Not recommended if you‘re looking for sci-fi, horror, or something completely unpredictable. Totally. Freaking.
