Not quite a 4, but I rounded up as I liked Ruby's writing style. Brothers Sean and Finn O’Sullivan live in Bone Gap by themselves since their mother abandoned them after their dad died in a truck accident. Everyone loves Sean, but Finn is different -- kind of disconnected. A battered girl (Roza) appears mysteriously in their barn, befriends the boys, is adored by all, and then disappears in a black SUV in front of Finn. Nobody believes Finn and he is the only one working to rescue her, but from what or whom?

The novel is dark but whimsical, with a sweet, budding romance between Finn and a girl named Petey, who thinks she is ugly, but who Finn finds beautiful, begin a sweet romance, and spending time with the two of them was one of the great joys of this book. The magic of Bone Gap could have been better developed, and who has ever heard of prosopagnosia anyway? ( )

Teen suspense; realistic fiction with magic/fantasy elements (kind of a cross between Gone Girl and The Magician). Awesome thriller of a suspense novel with pretty decent character development. The cover confuses some (one of the major characters is a beekeeper, so it's kinda relevant) but it'd be hard to come up with a compelling relevant graphic besides ... corn fields? ghostly figures? magical horses? giant dogs and broken mirrors? Maybe the reprint will have a shattered glass/corn field theme. Along with The Bunker Diary (creepy!), this will be one of my frequently recommended titles for teens this year. ( )

I'm having a hard time reconciling the fact that I was hooked on this book while reading it, but as I've mulled over it today, I think I've become slightly less enamored. Now that I'm thinking back on it, it might be that the fantastical aspects of the book didn't actually work very well. A lot of those details felt like cop-outs for fully exploring an issue or flourishes leaving loose ends...I get that it adds to the whole ambience of the book, but I like my magical realism (if that's what we're calling it...it seemed to veer into portal fantasy to me) to be a bit more meaningful. Also, while I was intrigued by the whole prosopagnosia thing, I was also a bit disappointed that it was the only way Petey could be found attractive. Because apparently there's only one way to be physically attractive.

Still, as I said, this book was gripping from beginning to end with creepy twists galore. Even though I had some problems with it, I still think it accomplished what it set out to do. It'll be a good discussion when my library book group meets for it.

PS-I think I'm through with captivity novels for a while. ( )

Weird, and great. I guess I like a happy ending. ( )

Bone Gap feels like another Wasp Box or adventure beyond things, it teases and hints at magic and something beyond what we can see, then pulls us back and forth. I don't not-recommend this book, but for a week read or part of a reading challenge it gets you muddled up and stuck. Tenses like past, present, future all become muddied, Roza is here, Roza is there, Roza is saying she is here and there. ( )
