In my opinion, this is a great book. The writing of the book is very organized and flows well. It starts off by talking about how much the boy loves his nana, but not where she lives which is in the city. This leads up to the climax where he even gets scared to go to bed, until his nanas cape changes everything. However, the writing of the book is paced a bit fast. There is not recognition or exact explanation as to why the cape made the boy feel brave. The text goes along greatly with the illustrations. For example, it says “The city is busy.” The illustration of this enhances the story with the huge crowd of people and a little boy who barely is seen and fits in. The illustrations fit the appropriate mood of the story. For example, on the page where it says, “At night, the room rumbles and shakes”, the illustration is the little boy looking through the window not being able to sleep. It shows his fear of the city that keeps him awake at night. It connects with the readers to think about how this boy must feel being scared at his own loved ones house. Readers can connect when they go somewhere unfamiliar for the night or move to a new place. The message of this book is that if you are scared, ever have any fears or are in a new place or situation you have never experienced, a loved one can help you if you trust them. ( )

A fun book to use to talk about being brave. Also, I liked the idea that our outlook makes the same experiences look different. Beautiful pictures! ( )

This book is about a little boy who visits his nana in the big city. He first thinks the city is scary and loud but later changes his opinions with a little encouragement from a red cape. This would be a great story to introduce opinions or perspectives for young children. ( )

This is a book about a young boy who visits his grandma in the city. He is nervous about being in the city, but he has his nana, so everything will be alright. He guides us through all of the fun things him and his nana do while he's visiting the city.

This book has by far been my favorite children's book that I have read this semester. It is such a great, warm hearted story. One reason I love this book is because it is written very simple and clear. For example, one page just says,"The city is filled with scary things." It is great for a young reader! The story is told in first person from the little boy's perspective. I like how the author chose to do this because it makes it easier for smaller children to relate themselves to the young boy. The illustrations in this book are fantastic (hence why it won a Caldecott Honor). The author used very bright but warm colors on the pages, and it makes the book very energetic and interesting. This book also pushes readers to overcome their fears. Just like in this book, the little boy was afraid of the city. I think this book is very realistic to other readers, and that is why I enjoyed it so much. ( )
