Eve's must find a murderer who claims to be murdering for Eve and to bring the victims to justice. Her murderer leaves messages for Eve claiming to be her 'one true friend.' and has Eve scrambling to solve the case before the next murder, knowing eventually the murderer will turn to the people she cares about and herself.

If you like the 'In Death' formula you will enjoy this latest installment. Eve has grown so much over this series and her circle of friends has grown wide and we get to revisit most of them, getting a peek at what's going on in their lives as Eve reaches out to warn them of the danger. There are some intense moments that will keep you on your toes. Read this straight through, great read.

In the 40th Eve Dallas gets something that all celebrities have, much to their dismay, a stalker. This one show their devotion by killing those who have insulted Eve in some way. Eve's world has grown considerably since Naked In Death. Now she has friends and family and a life. The book provides a great mystery while giving Eve, and the reader, an opportunity to see how far she's come. ( )

Obsession in Death marks the 40th installment of the incredible world and dynamic duo that Robb introduced fans to back in 1995. Still going strong as ever, Robb has turned our lovely Eve from a lonely insecure woman to a woman rich in friends and love.

If not for my friend I would have skipped this entire book. I am glad that I just borrowed it from the library.

Forty books in and we don't have much going on with the characters of Eve and Roarke.
Eve is called in to investigate when an attorney she came up against comes up dead. A message left for Eve telling her that this person is their only true friend and that they are going to root out the bad guys for Eve since she can't.

This leads Eve into finding out about more and more of the people who have grown fascinated and obsessed with her and Roarke. Eventually those around Eve are concerned that if this person doesn't get what they want, they will turn on Eve and kill her.

So even though that is all said, there doesn't seem to be a sense of urgency at all. We have Eve feeling some twinges about somehow being killed because of her. But it also seems that Eve thinks that the attorney that died was a horrible person because they were a defense attorney. I hate it when we have her acting black and white about things because she's exhausting. You end up wanting her to be wrong about things because in these books, Eve is never ever wrong. Unless she and Roarke are fighting and either she is wrong or he is wrong, but it doesn't matter they will have make-up sex.

Frankly every In Death book reads like the same thing and you don't miss much if you just read the first few chapters and skip to the end. Crazy me, I read the whole thing and was able to call ever action by every character to the point that I was pretty embarrassed.

Eve is called into investigate a murder. Eve or Roarke or somehow tied to the case at hand. If Roarke is involved he pushes his way onto the team to help out as a civilian consultant (apparently in the future no freaking defendant would ever squawk about this when their case came to trial) if he is not Eve involves him with the case anyway.

Somehow Roarke though he has billion dollar businesses still takes out time to go to scenes or run data searches for Eve which he is able to do while not at the computer so they can then go off and flirt and have sex and then Eve feels revved up and they go back to the case. Most books include at least two of these scenes.

Somehow tells Eve she needs to start taking care of herself. Usually Roarke. If Doctor Mira is in it it will be her and Roarke telling her that.

Eve will have multiple dreams that help her solve the case or think things through. It seems lately there seems to be some psychic connections happening between Eve and the deceased people whose murders she investigates so who knows that that is about.

Peabody snarky as usual will talk about how fat she is though McNabb doesn't mind.

There may be an appearance by Mavis or Mavis and her daughter.

Eve will be rude to Summerset and vice versa.

Eve captures the bad guy. Bad guy confesses all to Eve.

I didn't use to mind the constant repetition of these books because there was something comforting about it. Now 40 books in I find myself bored. I can't read anymore about Eve not getting metaphors. Or her talking about her dreams with Dr. Mira. Or whatever else is going on.

I love series books for the most part, but what makes most readers come back is that there is character growth and or something is done to completely shake up the series to keep readers on their toes.

We did get growth from Eve in the first 10 or so books with her falling in love with Roarke and being more open of those around her. With her gathering friends when she had none besides Mavis before. Now we just have nothing else happening with Eve besides her always winning a fist fight with suspects, being able to tell whodunit right off the bat in some of the books, etc. It's boring.

There have been some continuity problems galore the last several books too. Don't get me started on that pre-nup sub-plot dropped in Concealed in Death. I am still mad about it. I know readers got really ticked about changing the color and the coat that Roarke got the button that he carries around with him at all times. Well this book Eve's necklace somehow gets swallowed by Bella. I remember in the first book that this diamond was huge. Bella is what? Two at this point? How the heck did she even swallow the thing? I saw some other reviewers flipping out about it and I just hard shrugged myself. Continuity has been a problem for a while now, and maybe there needs to be a series Bible so little issues like this stop cropping up.

My friend asked me what would I do to improve these books and I told her, well the time for that in my opinion came and went. It would have been exciting if Eve had taken the captaincy offered to her in Thankless in Death (In Death #37).

That would have been a wonderful stopping point for that character. We could have continued the In Death books by fast forwarding decades if Ms. Robb wanted to with the character of Nixie who readers met in Survivor In Death (In Death #20). That would have fit perfectly because we know that Nixie has been changed by the massacre of her family and she sees in Eve someone that she wants to be one day. Then we could have gotten a new character that readers would have been interested in and we would get some appearances by Eve and Roarke. Heck Peabody would still probably be around too. We would get to peak in on their home lives or hear about them via Nixie's interaction with them and we wouldn't be bored.

Now if this books are going to continue for infinity and beyond as is, well to make me want to read again barring a new character being introduced and taking over as the star of the In Death books well something needs to change. Have a major character death, have someone else in the little group get married, have a baby, move away. I don't know. Have Eve lose once in a while. Have her know who did a crime but she can't do anything about it. That could end up being a cold case that gets referenced through other books that she thinks about or studies when she has downtime.

As is, I find myself not seeking these books out and if I read them in the future, it is going to just be a library borrow. These haven't been must read books for me in some time. ( )

I read these books like popcorn. A contained mystery in every book, light touches of SF since it is set in the near future and and a solid romantic couple. Granted the parts about Rourke being a consultant on her cases all the time is a bit of a stretch it is still cute and keeps him in the plot focus. This one has a killer that is obsessed with Eve and wants to be her true friend. Of course the killer escalates and gets mad with Eve as she tries to stop the killings as it goes from people that might have done her wrong in the pursuit of justice to striking someone close to Eve. What the plot does is force Eve to realize just how many people she is close to and how she finds it hard to protect them all. This is one series that you need to start at the beginning and just plow straight through. The introduction of new characters and how she weaves them in and out of the books really makes it important to read them in order. ( )
