I have read this book before but I don't recall when and where but I love the friendship Maddi and Sofia have. I also love how at the end of the book they give ways to help other who may not have food in their fridge like Maddi's.

Such a wonderful and cute written and illustrated book. The friendship between the young girls really show the loyalty and love they have for one another. It’s a nice and friendly book to show children.

A great story about a middle class kid discovering that her classmate doesn't have enough to eat, and trying to help.

I especially liked that the wealthier kid is Hispanic. ( )

Brandt does a phenomenal job as she tackles an important yet complex subject that is present in the lives of many children, yet is unknown and overlooked constantly. In this book, the topic of poverty is present as Sofia’s friend, Maddi, does not have much food in her fridge. After Sofia uncovers this, she then returns home and realizes how much food she has at her disposal that her family either wastes or doesn’t eat. She then comes up with the idea of giving Maddi some of it, but in a way that does not embarrass her but still helps her in a trustworthy and friendly way. Brandt’s literary technique of plot and character development aid readers as they can identify with the characters and uncover ways that they too can do the same for their less fortunate peers/friends. The main message of “Maddi’s Fridge” is for people to be there for their friends when needed, especially in situations such as this. Empathy is something for all children to practice and apply, and this is something that this book highlights clearly. I believe that the author brought this topic to the forefront of conversations in the classroom and at home as these situations are present in all environments, so it is increasingly important for children to understand this message as well as apply the practices that Brandt includes in the book in order to do their part in supporting their friends that are going through this. I love this book for many reasons! Sofia and Maddi are best friends who are playing together at the park and working up an appetite. Sofia and Maddi race to Maddi's home and Sofia throws open Maddi's fridge to get a snack, but the fridge is empty. In thousands of homes across America, the same would be true which is what I believe is the message in this story. Ashamed, Maddi begs Sofia not to tell anyone. What's Sofia to do when confronted by her best friend being hungry with no food to eat? This is a touching, engaging, and important book! I love how the story starts out with the girls playing together at the park and the situation of going home for a snack after playtime is so universal that all children will see themselves in the story. Sadly, the chances that some children's homes will have little to snack on are pretty high as are the chances that the hungry child will do anything he or she can to avoid the shame of having a friend discover that secret. I find Sofia's attempt to solve the hunger problem without alerting her own family hilarious. She keeps picking out food from her fridge to give to Maddi, but the food keeps expiring in her bookbag. I love the way Sofia keeps that secret until she realizes that there are some secrets you have to share with a trusted adult, when you know that keeping that secret is doing more harm than good. This book offers a great opportunity for parents, teachers and others who work with children to read the story out loud, discuss it with the children, and empower them to make a difference in each other's lives. It can also be a way to get those children who are hungry to identify themselves to someone who can help them and their family access food. There are so many programs out there but when hunger is kept secret the hungry continue to suffer, in many cases, needlessly. Unlike many "issue" books, the storyline is very realistic, with characters you fall in love with instantly, with illustrations that draw you into the children's lives, their neighborhood, their homes, and most importantly, their story.
