I tried to read this book. I really did! I just couldn't get past the gasps, exclamations, yelps and screams. The idea is there, but the book needed to be nurtured a little longer in the editing process. Det här är en av LibraryThings förhandsrecensioner. I received a copy of this book through the LT ER program. I knew nothing about the author when I started the book. It was a very compelling story about the homeless in Santa Barbara CA, with strong characters and a very reasonable plot that rang true. The story was sad, as it centered around the plight of the homeless, the substance abusers, and the mentally ill and makes you question our treatment of the less fortunate. In reading about the author at the end of the book, I found that he spent time as a social worker in Santa Barbara for more than 30 years. This was an excellent novel! I didn't mind it but I found myself wishing for more about Tracey. Her character didn't seem like it was a main part of the story and that is what I was hoping for since the cover I thought was supposed to portray her character. I thought the basis for the book was great and really looked forward to reading it because I think we need to bring more awareness to mental illness, homelessness and how they go hand in hand. Although the story was not exactly what I thought it would be I still think it was worth the read. And I am going to give it a generous 4 stars because I think for some this may be exactly the kind of read they are looking for and I think it is a subject we need to open our minds to. I'd just like to note that I received this early review copy through LibraryThing at no cost. Det här är en av LibraryThings förhandsrecensioner. Fractured Angel by Ken Williams is about the hardships of the homeless and the lives of those who care and watch over them. Kerry a Vietnam veteran and social worker has worked for 30 years attending and caring for the homeless in Santa Barbara. Lynne has won an internship with Kerry in the Sheltered Workshop and follows him around checking on the homeless. She has a hidden agenda. I really enjoyed this book and give it 5 stars. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
How would you go about trying to help your daughter who, suffering her first psychotic break at fifteen, is chased by her wounded mind to the streets of Santa Barbara? That is the dilemma that Lynne Swanson faces. Out of her element, and definitely out of her comfort zone for this professional woman, she is forced to seek the help of Kerry Wilson, a social worker for the homeless. Unfortunately for her, Kerry is a rough-necked loner that has no inclination to hold the hand of a woman who he feels is out for a lark at the expense of his homeless clients. The harsh and deadly realities of the streets in one of the wealthiest cities in the world and an attempt to close a homeless shelter just as winter sets in produces a dramatic race against time with the life of Lynne's daughter in the balance. “Fractured Angel” by Ken Williams follows the lives of its three main characters in an effort to examine the impact of mental illness on the individual, family and community at large. Fifteen-year old Tracey has run away from home and is living in a drainage pipe, haunted by the voices in her head. Lynne, her mother and successful business woman, has taken up an internship with a homeless shelter social work, in an effort to find her and bring her home. Kerry, the cynical social worker and emotional damaged Vietnam Vet, must work with Lynne, the government agencies and an unwelcome change of management, to help as many of the disadvantaged as he can.
The characters aren’t what I would describe as likeable but they are certainly true to life. The story is engaging and hard to put down. I have read better written books, but few with the raw emotion and honesty of this piece. ( )
