Good imitation of Doyle

Much more violent than Sherlock Holmes, but that makes sense when talking about Moriarty. The author pegged the Victorian writing style. ( )

After reading House of Silk, I was so thrilled to find Moriarty. Another trip into the world of Sherlock Holmes that feels like a lost Conan Doyle story? Yes, please!

The book is lovely and incredibly engrossing. I'm so confused by the reviews saying they didn't like the ending or didn't see it coming (as if that was a bad thing?). This is the kind of book that you NEED to reread before you finish.

Spoiler ahead:

When I reached the death of Jones, I was in shock because I didn't see it coming at all. Stunned, I moved to the next chapter and within the first paragraphs explaining what was going on, immediately started flipping back through the book to find all the clues I'd missed, and sure enough, they were there.

This and House of Silk are the kind of Sherlockverse stories I want to read and I will highly recommend both until I drop. ( )

Dnf p.262 but only because the book fell open to page 327 and accidentally read the bloody page. Otherwise I would have dnf'd at page 327.

I hate an unreliable narrator and there is a reason why The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one of my least favourite Christie books.
I know that seems an obscure reason for me to dnf the book but it'll will make sense if you've read it.

Two stars for the writing. ( )

This novel is set immediately after the famous confrontation between Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls, and features two men in pursuit of an American criminal who may be poised to take over Moriarty's crime operation in his absence.

I really enjoyed Horowitz's previous Holmes novel, The House of Silk, but found this one kind of lackluster in comparison. The plot is okay, and does feature an element or two that feel as if they would have been right at home in one of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories, but it never engaged me nearly as much as House of Silk did, and in the end the whole thing hinges on a twist of the plot that was in theory pretty clever, but just didn't 100% work for me. Also, it turns out that watching a minor character from the original canon running around trying to play Holmes isn't anywhere near as interesting as actually watching Holmes himself. ( )

Excellent book!

Horowitz keenly captured the atmosphere of a Holmes story, complete with adventure and mystery worthy of the connection to Doyle's writing. I highly recommend this for any fans of Sherlock. ( )

"Anthony Horowitz throws down the gauntlet in his infernally clever Sherlock Holmes pastiche, MORIARTY (Harper, $26.99), which opens five days after the great detective and his nemesis, Prof. James Moriarty, plunged to their picturesque doom near the pretty Swiss village of Meiringen."

"A Sherlockian pastiche without Holmes and Watson? Yes indeed, and it’s a tour de force quite unlike any other fruit from these densely plowed fields."

"Moriarty is a sound mystery novel, with traps, disguises and a good if not exactly unprecedented twist, but whether it scratches the Holmesian itch is another matter."
