I enjoyed this book a lot more than I thought I would, given its relatively low Goodreads reviews. I love books written in an epistolary style so it had me hooked on that front. I was actually pretty creeped out by some parts of this book, especially towards the beginning. However, once more of what was happening to the characters started to be explained more I started to be less and less scared. It was one of those situations that are common in the horror genre where not knowing what was going on or who was causing certain things to happen was scarier than what was actually going on. I was also only really attached to some of the characters. Others felt very unimportant to the point that for some characters I kept mixing them up or forgetting who they were all together and what their relationship to the main characters was. Overall though I did enjoy reading this book. It had some pretty creepy elements and I was able to fly through this book and I was engaged with the story basically the whole time. ( )

The Dead House
(The Dead House #1)
by Dawn Kurtagich
This story is told by diary, video, police interviews, and psychology interviews. Throughout the story we learn bits and pieces along the way of Carly's life. She has DID, split personality. Her other personality comes out at night. What follows is so bizarre the reader thinks she is really messed up in the head or there is a supernatural element going on too. It's a strange tale that kept me reading, trying to figure it out. Will the two identities merge? Who is the ghost like girl she is seeing? Who killed their friend? It didn't seem possible for Carly to have done it and hid the body so fast. Great mysteries. ( )

Personally, I didn't think this book was scary but it was still a great read and the fact that it was written as an investigation to a strange occurrence in 2005 made for a different reading experience. ( )

This is a book for people who like straight up horror, like the girl coming out of the tv or mirror, the demon possessing the child's body, the paranormal events being caught on camera, etc. That type of horror isn't really my thing, but I was still able to get into this story. It deals with mental issues like Dissociative Identity Disorder, magical religious practices and dark magic practices. Much of it is diary entries or home video recordings. ( )

Interesting premise and solid experimental format, but I couldn't quite decide if there are shades of the trope of the "crazy" girl who's not possessed, just mentally unstable. I think it walks the line of establishing that Kaitlyn/Carra's genuinely dealing with a mental condition that's complicated by possession rather than implying that she's just "crazy," but I don't have any personal experience with dissociative identity disorder so take that with a grain of salt. It's definitely creepy, scary, a little gory.
