A little hard to read in beginning due to language and long passages that appeared dull. But at the end, the book gives reader much to think about and the depth of the story and the main character stays with you. ( ) I read this (having avoided Trollope all my life) after reading Peter Hall’s praise in his riveting Diaries. I am glad I did. Gripping narrative, credible characterisation and surprisingly relatable situations. Although I admire Trollope’s instincts, the disproportionate discourses on the press and lawyers amongst other things jar slightly. Otherwise for me an ideal book for the holidays. Trollope spares no-one in this book although the putative villain, as viewed by press, reformer and public is the only one worthy of redemption. This book should be required reading for artless hacks who claim to have our interests at heart but are only self serving scribblers. I like the realism with which Trollope develops the story and this makes it relevant to now as ever. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

HTML: The first of Anthony Trollope's works to receive widespread popular and critical acclaim, The Warden follows the career of Septimus Harding, the warden of an almshouseâ??an early form of subsidized housing for the poorâ??who is forced to adapt to looming social changes when a zealous young reformer comes on the scene. Confusion, crossed wires, and much hilarity ensue. A must-read for fans of witty social satire Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
