The Ugly Duckling was always a favorite for me. It shows you how something is always worth the wait even if your waiting to become something beautiful. You can't dwell on it and let everyone else make you feel bad about yourself. We all know that there is one little duckling that looks different from his brothers and sisters but when he grows up, he's a beautiful swam. ( )

The Ugly Duckling by Han Christian Anderson is translated from the original Danish tale by Anthea Bell. The tale was lively and followed the oral tradition I heard growing up. The story's theme is to embrace what makes you different. The Ugly Duckling grew up in shame because everyone thought he was ugly and different. Every where he traveled, he was rejected him and misunderstood. In the end of the story, the Ugly Ducking grows into his beautiful swan self and understands why he felt like he did not belong. ( )

The Ugly Duckling, illustrated by Robert Ingpen.

Once described by Hans Christian Andersen as a work of "autobiography," The Ugly Duckling is one of those literary fairy-tales that has so thoroughly entered the folk idiom that it feels like the genuine article. The phrase "ugly duckling" itself - like that of "sour grapes," from Aesop's The Fox and the Grapes - has entered colloquial speech, often used as short-hand for the idea of the late bloomer: a testament to the tale's influence on its many readers.

This edition features a full translation by Anthea Bell, who has worked on so many other Andersen tales, and the beautiful illustrations of Australian artist, Robert Ingpen. All the ugliness of the original story is here: the duckling's rejection by his fellows (as well as his own mother), his short-lived friendship with two wild ganders, who are shot down before his eyes, his days of cold and hunger during the long winter. This suffering, so often softened in other retellings, gives the eventual happy ending here added power. Ingpen's art has a lovely impressionistic feeling, with a somewhat somber palette that matches the text. All in all, a very pleasing edition of this popular tale! ( )

This is the full-true story of the Ugly Duckling so it might be a little much for those under the age of 6. I would probably retell this version to maybe older children. It has a lot of bullying in the story. The othe animals were very mean and cruel to the duckling. This story is great for character building. This book was located in the E section at Statham Public Library.

The story is about an ugly duckling that shows the importance of not judging others on what they look like. It's amazing how something the ugly duckling can turn out to be something so beautiful. The artwork is beautful in the book. This is a great book on teaching kids about not judging others on what they look like but what is on the inside. This is a wonderful story if two children in the classroom are not getting along because it can teach kindness. ( )
