I enjoyed this chronicle of the ties between a young orca and a teen boy, with chapters alternating between their points of view. I liked that the author used the term "Being" for the whales instead of animals or mammals; this helps to show that they have a culture of their own. Will Jackson is quite a unique character with his love and talent for opera singing, his Goth style, and his sensitivity for animals and people. His connection with the orca he names "Min" is through music; their mutual singing is a thing of beauty. As a recent visitor to New Zealand, I enjoyed and learned more about NZ culture, both Maori and White. Hager obviously did a lot of research into orcas as well. This is a story for mature teens; it contains profanity and respectful, mild sex between teens. Other themes include physical, mental, and emotional abuse; illegal whaling; friendship; family; and community, all well-written and realistic. (

Winner of the 2015 Margaret Mahy Book of the Year Young Adult Book Award. A well written insight into the human condition. A teenage boy hiding from public humiliation via social media discovers a young orca whose mother has just been killed by rogue whalers. Determined to protect the whale at all costs he embarks on a mission to find out as much as he can about orca find the rest of the baby whales family. A well deserved win for this book! (

Story of the connection between a young man and a baby orca. Together they find healing from the bond they create. One from a humiliating event involving social media and the other from the loss of his mother and separation from his pod. The orca is a catalyst for change in the guy who sets out to protect the orca from threats made by an aggressive salmon farmer. It is a story about out relationship with others and our environment that is told beautifully. (

An extraordinary story of a boy who protects a baby whale that locals believe is threatening their livelihood.

Will Jackson is hiding out, a city boy reluctantly staying with his uncle in small town New Zealand while he struggles to recover from a brutal attack and the aftermath of a humiliating YouTube clip gone viral.

After he discovers a young abandoned orca whale his life is further thrown into chaos, when he rallies to help protect it against hostile, threatening interests. This threatens to tear apart the small fishing community and forever changes Will's life.

The boy and the whale develop a special bond, linked by Will's love of singing. With echoes of classic book and film The whalerider this powerful connection is utterly convincing on the page.

An exciting plot-driven story full of drama, tension and romance, this magical book captures both heart and mind to hold the reader enthralled from start to finish. These qualities, along with its lyrical use of language and its compelling and persuasive exploration of many global concerns, makes this a beautifully touching, rich and multi-layered story by an award-winning writer for young adults.
