The Screech Owls are in Boston for the Paul Revere Peewee Invitational. Nish decides to drop out of school. If it worked for Ben Franklin, it will work for him. Sarah becomes increasingly concerned about Samantha's attraction to a group of protesters demanding that the New England Aquarium 'Free the Penguins.' I felt like the mystery was missing from this book and that the author was clearly taking a stand against animal rights activists.
It fell into the typical formula for the screech owl books, which I'm fine with because it works; boys go away on a tournament and stuff happens, but it didn't have the mystery that I was expecting.
All in all, not one of my favourites from the Screech Owl series. ( )

This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers.

Hockey fans will, hopefully, already know of and/or read this series. The sports action and drama doesn't disappoint. The surrounding details are less appealing. The animal rights intrigue was forced and awkward. The combo of realistic sports drama and melodramatic Scooby-Doo reheats is a funny mix. ( )

I read this to my 7 and 9 year old boys (who, as strong readers, are capable of reading it on their own but it's a family tradition to read together in the evenings). They played hockey only briefly as little ones, and are not avid sports fans, but enjoyed the descriptive hockey action interspersed throughout the book nonetheless. They mystery involved also kept them wanting me to read it to the end. So while they weren't blown away, they still enjoyed it.

'The Boston Breakout' was a nice entertaining and quick read. I was lucky enough to get a copy sent to me, and I can see this as a book that both girls and boys would enjoy, and that both fans of hockey and mysteries would enjoy also. The characters were likable and the story was relatable, and the dialogue I think was realistic to the characters as well. I would recommend this book to parents of children that would be a relatively easy read that also teaches a lesson while also entertaining. ( )

The Boston Breakout
By Roy MacGregor

I am a HUGE hockey fan but I had never heard of the Screech Owls until I received this book for a review. I can't believed I missed out on these stories growing up...

This particular book in series deals with the Screech Owls going to Boston for a tournament and they end up getting mixed up in an animal rights demonstration to "free the penguins" that leads to something more...
What happens? You'll have to read it!

Additionally, this book was great for learning! The author included many interesting facts about American history and presented them in an interesting way. Ideal for children who don't necessarily care for such "boring" things like history...

I love the hockey action descriptions, the diversity of the characters and the overall idea behind the books. I have only read this one but it seems that there are many mysteries the Screech Owls get involved with...kind of like the Scooby Doo of hockey. This particular story wasn't so much a mystery but it was an adventure. Let's face it, you can't solve mysteries everyday!

Kids and adults will love the book and probably the whole series, especially if they are hockey players/lovers/fanatics (like me). I plan to start buying the omnibus editions to read to my newborn daughter...yes, girls can be hockey players too, just look at the Screech Owls!

This books was a fun and interesting read: 4 Stars!!! ( )
