Six of Crows is the first half of a duology, set in the Grishaverse as Bardugo's previous series, but with a new cast of characters. In this one, a group of six underdogs/misfits come together to pull off a seemingly impossible task: to break into a high security prison to rescue a scientist who's created a powerful but dangerous drug.

This series has a different feel than Bardugo's previous Shadow & Bone trilogy. Mainly, there's a lot more action. And I certainly seem to be in the minority here when I say that I didn't like this quite as much as the Shadow & Bone series. I agree with most reviewers who have said that the character development is better in this one. Yes, it is. I think my only real problem is that I'm not a huge fan of heist-type stories, so that tended to put me off somewhat on this book. Lots of over-the-top rescues and unrealistic tasks that just felt too fabricated. (Think Oceans Eleven.) But that's just me. Anyone who goes for that type of thing should enjoy this. I did grow fairly attached to the characters and I'll continue on with the other half of the series. ( )

I liked this first book in Leigh Bardugo's new series. She continued to rely on her magical Grisha, who manipulate matter in its most basic elemental stages. In this story, a group of six misfits, with checkered and mostly impoverished pasts, are offered an enormous sum of money to rescue a chemist from the most guarded part of an impenetrable prison. Each member of the team dreams of how the reward will change their miserable lives, has to use their individual talents, and work together in order to succeed, but things go awry at the end so we will read the sequel. I will be happy to do so and Bardugo writes well, especially the love/hate tensions between the characters. ( )

I created a new tag for this one called “Schlock”. Congratulations to Ms. Bardugo for landing a Netflix series based in this storyline. I would be interested in the psychology behind the industry’s surfeit of YA novels based on dystopian worlds with irredeemable characters. Has no one an original idea anymore? This one (and their name is legion) is an Ocean’s Eleven in a fantasy world with the characters all criminal teenagers. We are supposed to sympathize. The characters are launched on an epic quest to steal drugs. They are led by a 17 year old criminal mastermind who has somehow acquired an unlikely level of strategic skill no matter how hard a life he had. Does the freedom and disregard for human like make a YA reader feel empowered? I had to start skimming to get through this. I like fantasy when it’s not warmed over. I can hear Ms. Bardugo laughing all the way to the bank. ( )

fiction (fantasy/supernatural powers vs. "regular" people, crime/heist story, protagonist with unnamed degenerative crippling condition = osteonecrosis). Same setting as the Grisha trilogy (which takes place several years earlier) but can stand alone. I might have enjoyed this more if I'd read the Grisha trilogy first, but I liked it OK. The characters were fleshed out nicely and I sort of do want to follow them on their future adventures, but my attention strayed quite a bit in between the action scenes. ( )

Just saw the show on netflix. Found Kaz and jesper fascinating and wanted to read that storyline.
Read this book and i must say i am impressed.
Kaz as a complex character who doesnt quite know what to do with his humanity is fanstastic.
Inej with her strong moral compass is fascinating too.
Loved the Nina /Mathias storyline in the show and the after that is depicted in this series.
If there was something that was a bit dissapointing it was that Jesper is not portrayed nearly as interesting in the book as he was in the show.
Another thing that it looks like the author does in most of her series is to leave it in a cliffhanger status.
Normally that is something i absolutely hate. Even if it is a series I would like the book to have a logical ending and the next book to be a book that may be read as a standalone or as a part of the a whole. Like the Harry Potter books.
This author definitely doesnt do that. It is a complete cliff hanger in the show and a complete cliff hanger in this book too.
Only consolation is that i am cathing up wth this series long after it was written so i dont actually have to wait an year or two to see how it ends ( )
