"Late one spring, Hallie Hartley learns she's inherited a beautiful old house on Nantucket from an ancestor she never knew she had. She learns of her luck from Jared Montgomery, who arranges for her to take on his cousin James Taggert as a private physical therapy client for the summer. Hallie expects a spoiled, frivolous playboy, but Jamie surprises her by being kind, considerate, and humble--not to mention incredibly strong and handsome. But Jamie's hiding something: every night Hallie hears him crying out in his sleep. Finding that only her presence can calm him, Hallie begins spending the night with Jamie, sneaking away every morning before he wakes up. It's not until Jamie's extended family descends onto the island to celebrate a lavish wedding that she discovers the truth: Jamie was a soldier, wounded in combat while saving a friend, and has suffered from PTSD since his return. Jamie withdraws, embarrassed by his vulnerability, while Hallie questions how she can trust him after he's lied to her all summer. But as the two team up to solve another of Nantucket's enchanting mysteries, whether it's the romantic island setting or possibly the work of some meddling matchmaker ghosts, Jamie begins to realize maybe he's found the one woman who can love him for who he is, scars and all"--… (mer)

My Review

Ever After (Nantucket Brides Trilogy, #3) by Jude DeverauxMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Jude Deveraux has always been one of my favorite authors to read. Have been reading her since I was sixteen. Her ability to convey strong emotion within her stories whether they be historical or contemporary is mind boggling to me. Ms. Deveraux has a way of stealing the heart right out of your chest with her descriptive and intriguing stories. Ever After is a contemporary romance with a hint of fairytale rapture. The Jude Deveraux stamp is on every page. Heartwarming, breathtaking, emotionally fulfilling is all displayed within this beautiful read. Add in strong and endearing characters and you have a masterpiece.

The think I love about Jude Deveraux books is that they usually always have 2 people who fall in love with each other but always think the other one is too good for them and that they could not possibly feel the same way. There is usually someone trying to break them up and the rest of the cast is secretly wishing they would tell each other how they feel and get it over with. That might sound trite, but the great thing is that there is always a great story surrounding that premise. These are romances and her books are a fantastic way to fill the need for that type of a book. This is another Montgomery/Taggart story, a family that is huge and always entertaining.

In this story, Hallie (Hyacinthe) is a physiotherapist who has been walked on by her gorgeous step-sister. When Hally moves to Nantucket to live in a house that was left to her by a relative that she did not even know. She already has a patient ready for her services living in the downstairs of the house. He has bad knee from a skiing accident. She is whisked away on the family jet and is settled in at her new house. Of course, Jamie Taggart sees her and falls in love. As they get to know each other, Hallie is equally smitten but sees Jamie as a jet setting playboy who will love her and leave her once his injury is healed. The Montgomery/Taggart family are on Nantucket for a wedding so there are a lot of beautiful women and men in the story. The other interesting part of the story is the history of the house and the "ghosts" that inhabit it. The ghosts make a few appearances and are instrumental in getting Hallie and Jamie together. A quick summer time read that is sure to make you smile.

Thank you Netgalley and Ballantine Books for reintroducing me to an author and family that I have loved in the past. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. ( )

Guilty pleasure. Jude Deveraux's books are all predictable, but are a guilty pleasure! ( )

Some scars aren't as visible as others.

Hallie Hartley has lived in her step-sister's shadow for most of her life. Saddled with a step-mother only Cinderella could appreciate, Hallie comes home one day to find her step-sister impersonating her and trying to sell her house. Hallie's only option is to go to the house in question and fulfill the responsibilities her sister forged upon her - literally.

What she finds is Jamie Taggert, a man recovering from a "ski accident" and much more. As she slowly earns his trust and sees the depths of his injuries, she finds herself drawn more deeply into the comfort of Jamie and his family. At the same time, Jamie discovers Hallie's scars, scars she isn't even aware she has.

With the intervention of two maidenly ghosts, Jamie and Hallie find the only way they can both be healed, through the gift of true love.

Love this third in the Nantucket Brides Series. ( )

Ever After is the first novel I’ve ever read in the Nantucket Brides series. It’s also the first book I’ve read by Deveraux. Although I hadn’t read any of the previous books in the series, I felt like the novel was easy enough to read like a standalone. It did feature some of the characters from the previous novels, but I never felt confused or overwhelmed.

There was a nice progression of romance between Hallie and Jamie throughout the course of the novel. Their relationship never felt rushed or was a “insta-love” kind of deal. They start out meeting each other as a physical therapist and patient, they become friends, and then they eventually develop a deeper relationship with one another. Hallie helps Jamie heal his physical wounds, but they both end up trying to help each other get over their emotional wounds that keeps holding them back in their lives.

I thought that the “haunted house” aspect of the plot was entertaining and definitely added a little spice to the story. I appreciated the great detail that was used to describe the landscape of Nantucket. It made me feel like I was looking at the blue waters of Cape Cod. All of the character’s were likable except for Hallie’s spoiled step-sister, but the characters I most enjoyed were Jamie’s family members. They were funny and it was interesting to see them play matchmaker with Hallie and Jamie. ( )
