The Unannounced Christmas Visitor by Patrick Higgins is a stand-alone Christmas story. Enoch, disguised as a homeless man, is sent to earth on a Mission. To rescue John Jensen who has started to slip into a depression that may be the end for him. Lydia, John’s wife, takes solace in her church until she sees how Enoch is treated by all those around her. I was excited to read this book. It sounded so good, with so much potential. In actuality it turned out to read like a Bible commentary instead of a Christmas fiction story. The story part was very minimal. While the preaching went on for page after page. Don’t get me wrong. There is nothing wrong with putting Bible verses into a fiction story. In fact, I rather enjoy it. But when you pick up a book expecting to read a good story and that story is so buried you can barely find it I think you’ve lost your reader. I received this book from Celebrate Lit in exchange for my honest review. The story is a wonderful reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. I know we have all seen homeless people and probably looked the other way. What would happen if a homeless person came to your church one Sunday? Would they be welcomed or shunned liked Enoch was? I wasn't shocked at all by the reaction from the congregation. It is sad but true that we sometimes miss our opportunity to reach out and be His hands and feet. I loved Enoch and his wisdom. He may be an angel sent from God, but to me He was an answer to prayer for Lydia and John. Lydia was a joy to read about and I loved her heart to reach out to Enoch. Taking her children with her to feed the homeless was an eye opener to them. The lesson was good to show them that all they really wanted was for someone to care. I liked the message in the book but at times I felt it almost predictable. It became very preachy at times and turned into days of sermons and less about saving a marriage. I'm not sure I would be so willing to bring a stranger into my house especially with young children, so that part of the story took me by surprise. I understand what the author is trying to get across to readers. We never know who we may encounter in our lives. We should always be kind and do what we can to reach the homeless, the hurting and the unwanted. I have heard people say " I'm not giving them money cause they will just use it to buy drugs or alcohol." God wants us to help not judge. We give money in hopes they will use it for clothes and food. But if they chose not to, it's between them and God. There were a few things I didn't like such as how willing Lydia was to bring strangers to her home, and the almost forgotten part of the trouble in their marriage. The story focused on John and what he needed to change. But, in a marriage it takes two people. I wanted the author to show how Lydia needed to work on herself as well. The story has a good message of salvation and how we can entertain angels without realizing it. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion. “Those who rest in the promise that God really does take care of those who belong to Him, despite what happens each day, are the ones who leave all of the consequences to Him.” Reminiscent of a Hallmark Channel movie, “The Unannounced Christmas Visitor” certainly embodies the spirit of the Christmas season. The reading experience was an unexpected surprise because on the surface it seemed as though the story was very transparent. From the beginning I knew what was going on, and the revelations were apparent. As an avid reader of mysteries and thrillers, this concerned me because I was uncertain about what this meant for the book. What now? What is going to keep me turning the pages? As it turns out, in spite of my misgivings, I became emotionally invested in this book. The characters were not unique, and I say this in a good way because they represent all of us and enable us to connect with them so easily. They aren’t perfect; they reflect our own sins and shortcomings, with a familiar internal monologue of contending thoughts. Marital troubles, homelessness, and hypocrisy are some of the main themes. Where this story really shines is through how it navigates these predicaments, embracing them rather than shying away from them. “The Unannounced Christmas Visitor” contains a plethora of Scripture, which will be reassuringly familiar to seasoned Christians and immersive and enlightening to non-Christians. Not only that, but the way in which the story tackles the difficult questions offers readers a different perspective. This book is nothing if not inspirational, and it is a call to action for all of us to entertain strangers, not only at Christmastime but all year round. I received a complimentary copy of this book through CelebrateLit and was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

My Thoughts: This novel is certainly a winner! It comes just in time for the holiday and Christmas season, reminding us how important hospitality and loving others is. It's not about receiving but in giving from the heart. Patrick Higgins has done an incredible job of showing us through his writing how important it is to give to others. How we need to have the love of God in us in order to feel complete. This novel truly moved me and it will certainly speak to those who are feeling lost, depressed or not knowing their God-given purpose.
This book will make the reader think twice about how society treats the homeless and what would your church do if a homeless person came into the church next Sunday? Patrick Higgins hit a lot of points in this book and I recommend that every Christian give this book a read.
