"Something big is brewing in Trenton, N.J., and it could blow at any minute. Stephanie Plum might not be the world's greatest bounty hunter, but she knows when she's being played. Ken Globovic (aka Gobbles), hailed as the Supreme Exalted Zookeeper of the animal house known as Zeta fraternity, has been arrested for beating up the dean of students at Kiltman College. Gobbles has missed his court date and gone into hiding. People have seen him on campus, but no one will talk. Things just aren't adding up, and Stephanie can't shake the feeling that something funny is going on at the college--and it's not just Zeta fraternity pranks. As much as people love Gobbles, they hate Doug Linken. When Linken is gunned down in his backyard it's good riddance, and the list of possible murder suspects is long. The only people who care about finding Linken's killer are Trenton cop Joe Morelli, who has been assigned the case, security expert Ranger, who was hired to protect Linken, and Stephanie, who has her eye on a cash prize and hopefully has some tricks up her sleeve"--… (mer)

You just have to love these characters! Lula, the former whore turned bounty hunter, bedazzles flea collars to ward off bubonic plague this time around. Grandma catfishes younger men online, who then show up expecting dates with Stephanie. Ludicrous & delightful. Yes, there is also a mystery to be solved! Fun read! ( )

3.5*
This was definitely the formulaic Janet Evanovich Stephie Plum novel that all have come to know and love. Strangely enough, the Ranger/Morelli plot line didn't bother me as much as some of the past books have. The emphasis was definitely on the cases that Stephanie was working and not which man should she choose to be with. Even though the plot can be slightly predictable (you know there are going to be antics between Stephanie and Lula trying to capture FTAs with Grandma Mazur throwing things off from time to time), I still enjoy the fact that you know the end of the story will be nicely wrapped up with the bad guys getting caught and Stephanie with a few scares, coming out mostly unscathed. This fast moving plot was just what I needed at this time.

Without going into great detail, the thing that really made this a 3.5* versus a 3 star was the roll Stephanie's mother played in this book. I laughed out loud a few times while listening and one of the times was when Stephanie's mother played a major role in bringing in a FTA. If you have read this book, you will probably know which scene I am talking about. I loved that it was "Mom" versus Grandma taking part in Stephanie's line of work. It was definitely heart-warming. This, compiled with the emphasis on the work vs. man problems boosted this Stephanie Plum novel a little above the last few that I have listened to. Well done, Evanovich. Now if we can just see whether or not the statement from the last few pages will actually happen in the next book (I'm assuming not, but hey, I can be an optimist). ( )

I wanted to like it more than I did...really I wanted to LOL and ROTFLMAO like I did with previous Stephanie books. The problem is it's starting to feel like repeats just with a different side kick saving the day. (Though the person who took down this bad guy came out of left field.)

Let's see, does this sound familiar. Morelli is suffering physically because of Steph's job. He calls a temporary quit to the relationship and warns though she can date others Ranger is off limits. Steph is upset and needs to eat and reevaluate her life. Meanwhile, Lula still trying to shoot the bad guys while wearing clothes too small for her and eating twice as much as Steph whenever there is a mishap. Ranger still riding to the rescue and giving her cars to destroy.

I guess what really bothers me is here we are in book #22 and we still have to have the low down on who is who. How many times can we hear about Grandpa biting the farm whenever Steph needs to borrow Big Blue. Do we really need to know AGAIN why Grandma Mazur lives with her parents? The quick wit and slap stick comedy that ran through the first dozen or so books is now tired and has a canned laugh track.

This bad guy was another good guy gone crazy. College kids and business men get caught up in his insane plan to make "them" pay.

Will say there three highlights for me. (1) Finding Grandma Mazur has been cat-fishing online using Steph's photo. Man, some of the stuff she tells those guys...as Lula stated--she should be a writer. (2) The fight at the funeral home....only in the "Burg would this happen. (3) And the person who took down the bad guy! Figures they had it in them just never had the chance to let the urge out!

I know I have said it before but I'm done. This is my last Stephanie book. Think I had been hanging around in hopes of finding out more about Ranger and the two of them having a really torrid love affair. But the stale love triangle with Uber Alpha Ranger standing patiently on the side lines just doesn't ring true anymore. Morelli has lost the appeal for me becoming more of a jerk than the guy I want to cheer for. The other cast of characters, they seem so one dimensional now that I don't even find them funny. Yup, put a fork in me I'm as done as this series needs to be.

Tricky Twenty-Two
Stephanie Plum, Book 22

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series

The Characters:

Stephanie Plum:
Joe Morelli:
Carlos “Ranger” Manoso:
Grandma Mazur, Lula, Connie, Tank,

The Story:

Another good one. I think Stephanie missed her calling as a detective, with some real training she could really be something.
