Fiction. Mystery. Suspense. Thriller. HTML:Tortured and brilliant private detective Charlie Parker stars in this thriller by New York Times bestselling author John Connolly.
Former NYPD detective Charlie "Bird" Parker is on the verge of madness. Tortured by the unsolved slayings of his wife and young daughter, he is a man consumed by guilt, regret, and the desire for revenge. When his former partner asks him to track down a missing girl, Parker finds himself drawn into a world beyond his imagining: a world where thirty-year-old killings remain shrouded in fear and lies, a world where the ghosts of the dead torment the living, a world haunted by the murderer responsible for the deaths in his family??a serial killer who uses the human body to create works of art and takes faces as his prize. But the search awakens buried instincts in Parker: instincts for survival, for compassion, for love, and, ultimately, for killing.

Aided by a beautiful young psychologist and a pair of bickering career criminals, Parker becomes the bait in a trap set in the humid bayous of Louisiana, a trap that threatens the lives of everyone in its reach. Driven by visions of the dead and the voice of an old black psychic who met a terrible end, Parker must seek a final, brutal confrontation with a murderer who has moved beyond all notions of humanity, who has set out to create a hell on earth: the serial killer known only as the Traveling Man.

In the tradition of classic American detective fiction, Every Dead Thing is a tense, richly plotted thriller, filled with memorable characters and gripping action. It is also a profoundly moving novel, concerned with the nature of loyalty, love, and forgiveness. Lyrical and terrifying, it is an ambitious debut, triumphantly realiz

This is the author's first book. I liked the atmosphere he created , his descriptions, some of his characters. His plot was pretty much every serial killer cliche wrapped into one big package. Enjoyed the supernatural elements and, as I said, will give him another try, for a first-time novel, quite an accomplishment

I really have liked several of Connolly's books, but this one left me empty. Bird is an interesting character, but I was left not believing the plotting or connecting with the main character. There were a few times that his character started to deepen only to be lost in the gory violence. I don't know if I will go further in the series. ( )

Parker neemt na de moord ontslag bij de politie en zijn vroegere chef vraagt hem om een zaak op zich te nemen omtrent de vermissing van een meisje. Dat brengt hem naar de moerassen van Louisiana waar hij in contact komt met een familie waarvan de moeder speciale gaven heeft. Zij heeft het over een gestorven meisje en de dader bij wie alles later samenkomt;

Ondertussen wordt het vermiste meisje gevonden maar niet in een toestand die Parker voor ogen had. Langzaam beginnen er verbanden te ontstaan tussen de dood van zijn gezin, het vermiste meisje en andere vermiste personen uit Louisiana. Op een hotelkamer wordt zoveel mogelijk op papier met elkaar in verband gebracht en ik houd van de cliffhangers die daar bij horen;

Connolly besteedt enige aandacht aan zijn hoofdpersonen en geeft ook de geschiedenis van hen mee en waarom ze soms hun lasten met zich meedragen. Dat leidt wel eens tot wat verhaallijnen buiten het hoofdverhaal om maar ze voegden voor mij wel iets toe. Enig humor ontbreekt ook niet. Als Charlie Parker (zijn vader kwam er later pas achter dat dit een jazzmuzikant was) met zijn donker gekleurde gangstervriend bij een paar maffiosi op bezoek gaat horen we;

Dark and grisly thriller with a touch of the supernatural about it. Opens with a brutal murder which sends the main character, Charlie Parker, into a spiral into darkness. Quits his job on the police force so that he can follow any lead no matter how tenuous and do the things that cops aren’t supposed to be able to do to find any scrap of information that will eventually lead him to the killer. To try and end his descent a former colleague and friend asks Parker to look into the disappearance of a young woman with links to a charitable trust.

There is a lot of violence in this book and it’s usually described quite graphically. It features mutilation, flayed victims and other traumatic scenes throughout. It’s also very much a first book and not without some of the problems that can occur. The dialogue is a bit clunk, it’s a book very much of it’s time and I doubt very much it would pass the Bechdel test as although there is a strong female character she is used primarily as a love interest/plot device. Some of the other background characters are interesting though and hopefully they recur in later books of the series. It’s not often that you get a gay black couple who are both strong and capable people in their own right. Yes, that does mean I intend to continue with the series as, despite it’s faults, this was an enjoyable read. ( )
