Finally putting Barrera away cost Keller dearlythe woman he loves, the beliefs he cherishes, the life he wants to lead.

Then Barrera gets out, determined to rebuild the empire that Keller shattered. Unwilling to live in a world with Barrera in it, Keller goes on a ten-year odyssey to take him down. This is an epic book.
It took me a while to read not because it was boring but its such along book.
Main character is DEA Agent Art Keller he works in Mexico to close down all the Drug Cartels.
Keller is a veteran and has seen so much in his career.
He has a personal vendetta against Drug Kingpin Adan Barrera who he wants to stop at all costs.
Things go from bad to worse in Mexico from 2004 to 2012, these horrible Cartels get out of control lots of normal people get caught up in the conflict.
Keller meets a lady called Marisol a Doctor who helps the poor.
Marisol is a strong willed Woman and she and a few other Ladies stand up to the Cartels but it doesn't go to plan.
More death and imdimation follows. No one knows who to trust, Police, Army and Government are all in bed with the Cartels and the Murder rate keeps on rising.
Marisol is badly injured, a few other people close to Keller are murdered.

There is a new group called Zetes who are even more evil than Barrera's gang.

Reluctantly a deal is done for Keller and Barrera to work together to stop Zetes. Barrera wants out anyway he is now the Father of 2 baby boys.
There is a big massive fight in the Jungle of Guatemala lots of casualties, Keller and a young boy called Chuy (who was a cold stone killer) get out and Keller looks after him.

Very sad in places but a thoroughly well researched book with great characters. I will read more of Wimslow's novels. ( )

The Cartel by Don Winslow is the second book in his Mexican Drug Cartel trilogy and this one is every bit as dark and violent as the first. This book is over 600 pages and together the first two books span over 40 years as the author details the rise of the cartels and the horrific violence that they spawned. The main character is DEA officer Art Keller whose main objective is to bring down the biggest of the drug overlords, Adan Barrera. These two are sworn enemies who have dogged each other for years, each one obsessed by the other.

These books present a multifaceted view of the war on drugs and show how the gangster tactics were slowly set aside in favor of global terrorism. Although not recognized as such, the cartels have become media savvy armies that spout some of the basics that we heard from Al Qaeda. In the years of 2004 to 2014 thousands were killed, and as the killings mounted, the way people were put to death became more and more nightmarish as these deaths were used to implant terror and control the population.

It is obvious that the author has done extensive research and although it is classified as fiction, there are many real life incidents that appear on the pages. The author states his purpose behind these books is to inform and advocate but it bears repetition to warn prospective readers of the high body count, and the grim descriptions of rape and torture. I have one more book in this trilogy to read and although this author delivers one hell of a story, it may be awhile before I am ready to face the violence, corruption and terror once again. ( )

Not my favorite. Couldn't finish it, it dragged. And I'm usually a fan of that type of content. ( )

I got about half way through and lost interest. I really enjoyed the first in the series, but this seemed like the same kind of thing..... over and over ( )
