August 26, 1910 through September 5, 1997, a miraculous, kind-hearted, and gracious woman changed the world. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a woman who dedicated her life to God as a religious sister at the age of eighteen. However, she knew God was calling her to become a sister at the age of twelve. She served as a geography, history, and English teacher at St. Mary's High School for Bengali girls. While working their she was infatuated with the Moti Jheel, Calcutta's worst slum. After this discovery, she left the convent and learned how to become a nurse who could perform surgery. In 1949, Teresa established the new congregation called the Missionaries of Charity, which vowed poverty, chastity, obedience, and wholehearted and free service to the poorest of the poor. Everything she did was for Jesus. This community of sisters grew quickly as women from all over the world agreed with Teresa's mission. Her major goal was to allow people to feel loved and wanted. She described the biggest disease today as the feeling of being unwanted and unloved. I agree that it is the same today. There are too many depression medications, anxiety pills, and lives taken in our current society. To love and be loved is the human hearts greatest desire. Mother Teresa's main focus was to give everyone she encountered the opportunity to feel their human desires. She accomplished this task by trusting in the Lord and giving everything she had to him. He helped her save thousands of lives each day, while inspiring people like me to do the same with our time hear on earth. This book was creatively written by deeply explain the intricate pieces of Mother Teresa's life. Demi, included quotations from Teresa's life that will be in my heart forever. This quotation is the essence of why I work as hard as I do for the Lord. "It is not how much we do but how much we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God." I chose this book because I don't really know anything about Mother Teresa, but she is well known to Catholics. She is a woman who appeared to be close to the spirit of God. She moved away and became poor, willingly. She had lots of sisters called nuns. She always cared for the poor, opened homes for them, and helped them greatly. I can't believe she was overseeing 3,000 nuns, 358 houses, and 80 nations. It also stated that SHE had 400,000 followers. She credited all that she had done, to God. ( )

After reading The Legend of Lao Tzu, I wanted to see more of Demi's incredible work. I did not realize so many interesting biographies were available.

This biography of Mother Theresa is filled with thoughtful, stylistically appropriate illustrations, which, in my opinion, attempt to capture the immensity of her good works and the humble service of her life. This book is, understandably, a very brief summary of her service, as there is too much to go into great detail in the form of a children's book. But it does give an idea of the great person that she was. As far as using the book in a school setting, I don't feel it would be appropriate for public schools, as it has references to Jesus that some children may not understand, and several prayers included in the text (Mother Theresa's and others). There are also several quotes from the bible, and the back cover of the book has a blessing from Pope John Paul II on it. It is clearly published for a religious readership. The overview of Mother Theresa's life, however, is interesting, as is the process that must be undergone to declare her a saint. I would say this is a wonderful book for Catholic school children. ( )
