With The Three-Body Problem , English-speaking readers got their first chance to experience the multiple-award-winning and bestselling Three-Body Trilogy by China's most beloved science fiction author, Cixin Liu. Three-Body was released to great acclaim including coverage in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. It was also named a finalist for the Nebula Award, making it the first translated novel to be nominated for a major SF award since Italo Calvino's Invisible Cities in 1976. Now this epic trilogy concludes with Death's End . Half a century after the Doomsday Battle, the uneasy balance of Dark Forest Deterrence keeps the Trisolaran invaders at bay. Earth enjoys unprecedented prosperity due to the infusion of Trisolaran knowledge. With human science advancing daily and the Trisolarans adopting Earth culture, it seems that the two civilizations will soon be able to co-exist peacefully as equals without the terrible threat of mutually assured annihilation. But the peace has also made humanity complacent. Cheng Xin, an aerospace engineer from the early 21st century, awakens from hibernation in this new age. She brings with her knowledge of a long-forgotten program dating from the beginning of the Trisolar Crisis, and her very presence may upset the delicate balance between two worlds. Will humanity reach for the stars or die in its cradle?… (mer)

The scope of this novel is immense - as big as the universe itself. And, for the most part, the author has done full justice to it. Following up on the fragile truce between Earth and Trisolaris, Death's End takes the reader on a journey millions of years, and millions of light-years, long. Survival, after having been exposed in the Dark Forest, is always an impossible task for the solar civilization. Brilliant technological advancements of humankind are followed by catastrophic blunders that propel it towards ultimate destruction. In the end, the entire length of the human history is not even a blip on the mind boggling scale of the universe and beyond.
The author's descriptions of the heavy science, the utterly incomprehensible subjects of space-time and the dimensions kept me engrossed. The unpredictable twists, though negative most of the times, kept me guessing.
As much as I enjoyed the grand setting of this novel, I felt it to be blunt as compared to the previous ones in the series. It seemed as if the plot became too big for the author to control and bring it to a crisp finish. The expectation of a cracking conclusion to this brilliant series remains somewhat unfulfilled due to the depressing, though possibly realistic, climax. And that made it a 3.5 star read for me.
But for this minor grouse, I absolutely enjoyed this amazing trilogy and will read it again after a few years... ( )

I loved the concepts presented and explored in this book. There were, how shall I say, some flat spots. (Some places of just long exposition that could have been more dynamically presented through characters; and the whole “fairytale” part could have been handled differently and shortened.)

But for me all this is overcome by the concepts presented. Best SF (other than The Expanse series) I’ve read in decades. Definitely this whole series is on my re-read list. I can’t think of a higher compliment than that. ( )

The payoff in this book makes the whole trilogy so worth it. What a payoff! ( )

A complete departure in style and scope from its predecessors. It has a grander, more epic sense of time and space, with humans finally reaching out into space. While Trisolarans play a major role in the first two-thirds of the book, they are replaced by a bigger threat, one that has a novel way of taking out entire civilizations.

I loved the take on string theory's eleven dimensions. Cixin imagines the world in four dimensions, exploring how humans could perceive 3D from 4D space. Twists keep coming, and the best part: you don't see them coming! I tried multiple ways of figuring out what the next move might be, but Cixin kept me on my toes, constantly guessing, most times wrong! This was a surprise, but a welcome one.

The ending really hits home the fragility of objects in relation to time and space. It shows how resilient humanity can be despite mob irrationality. It shows how love triumphs hate, standing above everything. It shows how grand humanity can be if given the chance.

Cixin has made me fall in love with hard sci-fi. Definitely read this book - it's the best of the three and wraps up the series in a novel way. ( )
