"On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee, his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy. He lives alone in a small but extremely safe penthouse apartment, and his primary piece of furniture is a vintage pool table. He drinks small-batch bourbon and carries a gun. Sebastian defends people other lawyers won't go near: a drug-addled, tattooed kid rumored to be in a satanic cult, who is accused of molesting and murdering two little girls; a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house. Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesn't like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the justice system's notions of ethical behavior" --… (mer)

"Rogue Lawyer" was far from one of my favorite Grisham books. Generally, his books feature a believable character involved in a legal issue of one sort or another, and a sympathetic lawyer working on the case. The rogue lawyer, Sebastian Rudd, really wasn't much of a likelable character, at least to me, and I found his attitude, distrust, and anger at almost every form of law enforcement tiring after a while. Most police officers he portrayed were sloppy, inept, or criminal, and opposing prosecuting lawyers were similarly portrayed as lazy or inexperienced, and the only judge he liked was one so senile that he could pretty much count on getting his way with him. Rudd himself was also let ethics go by the wayside if it meant winning a case. And of course, to complete the picture, Rudd has no office, works out of his pick-up truck, and has to deal with a spiteful, angry ex-wife.
My initial impression was that Grisham simply strung together several old ideas which never made it to book format, and just combined them to come up with a book and a lawyer to tie those ideas together. The lawyer, Sebastian Rudd, deals with a variety of criminals that no other lawyer wanted to touch. There was a young drop-out accused of murdering two little girls, a brilliant crime boss who continued to outsmart the police and prison system, a dropout from society who abducted young women for sex slavery, a victim of a botched SWAT team drug bust gone wrong, and a cage fighter who killed the referee in the ring after he lost his fight. All unsavory and unlikeable characters, as were most others in the book.
Still, I finished it, and I have to admit portions of the book managed to keep me interested. It just wasn't up to par as a typical Grisham page-turner. ( )

I came very close to not finishing it, which is rare for me. Plot and character development very weak. Very negative to law enforcement and the criminal justice system, even for Grisham. ( )

I got a slightly different feeling from this lawyer thriller/crime story than from the last Grisham novels I read quite some time ago. Suddenly the narrator is a bit more complex and far from "too perfect". Though I suspect Grisham's lawyers will always be some kind of "good guy" even when they are "bad guys".

Rogue Lawyer is about a criminal defense lawyer that defends people that are rarely innocent, and never liked. You could say he's universally despised, by police, prosecutors and ex wives. And clients. So it's no surprise he works from a van because his old office was torched.

The book starts as a number of distinct cases and later it's all woven together, more or less. It's not a great book, but it's also nothing heavy. A nice, enjoyable Grisham story. Nothing more, nothing less. ( )

I should have picked up this book sooner. Some how I was confused and thought this is part of his YA series. Main character sort of reminds me of Mickey Haller from the Lincoln Lawyer series. If you like legal thriller, you will like this book. ( )

Forgot how much I could enjoy a John Grisham novel! As it said on the dust jacket 'Gritty, witty and impossible to put down'.

At first I thought this was a collection of short stories with one main character. What I discovered was a very interesting sometimes gut wrenching novel served with delectable appetizers that setup the real story. It all worked so very well. Beyond simply being a novel Mr Grisham weaves into his story legal issues that are of concern to all rational people. In this respect it is a very insightful story and does underscore how the law can be prostituted and twisted to truly not serve and protect the people. In reading reviews I can understand why there are wide differing opinions on this novel. It is very different from most of John Grisham's works, and to me, is written on what I would describe as multiple levels which allow the reader to insert their perspective into the story. It can be a simple straight forward story or one that makes you think and ponder our society.

I found the story compelling and wanted to devour it a quickly as possible. It made me wish I did not have other things that required my attention. ( )

My name is Sebastian Rudd, and though I am a well-known street lawyer, you will not see my name on billboards, on bus benches, or screaming at you from the yellow pages.

Like so many, this trial is not about the truth; it's about winning.
The road to justice is filled with barriers and land mines, most of them created by men and women who claim to be seeking justice.
