I found myself feeling emotional reading this poem because although I was not born in this country, the words in it made me feel very connected to its culture. Richard Blanco recited this poem at Barack Obama's presidential inauguration, and although I did not know about this, it was really cool to be able to read it and see it turned into a book. Blanco focuses heavily on imagery and detail, which I think is amazing since he read this to millions of people on that special day. Blanco repeatedly says "one", and it will be followed by a word such as "one sky" or "one ground". That repetition adds emphasis, and it speaks to me when I read it. It makes the poem that powerful, and it captured my emotions. ( )

This book is much more serious than a typical children's book. This piece is a non-fiction historical poem that was written for the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. This book is a great way to open up kids minds and see how we all live and exist together. We all look at one sky and live in one world and today is just one today. The illustrations were beautifully done using bright colors to excite and cooler colors to represent the proper mood. The story line is strong and clear to understand. ( )
