"The stunning conclusion to Robin Hobb's Fitz and the Fool trilogy, which began with Fool's Assassin and Fool's Quest "Every new Robin Hobb novel is a cause for celebration. Along with millions of her other fans, I delight in every visit to the Six Duchies, the Rain Wilds, and the Out Islands, and can't wait to see where she'll take me next."--George R.R. Martin More than twenty years ago, the first epic fantasy novel featuring FitzChivalry Farseer and his mysterious, often maddening friend the Fool struck like a bolt of brilliant lightning. Now New York Times bestselling author Robin Hobb brings to a momentous close the third trilogy featuring these beloved characters in a novel of unsurpassed artistry that is sure to endure as one of the great masterworks of the genre. Fitz's young daughter, Bee, has been kidnapped by the Servants, a secret society whose members not only dream of possible futures but use their prophecies to add to their wealth and influence. Bee plays a crucial part in these dreams--but just what part remains uncertain. As Bee is dragged by her sadistic captors across half the world, Fitz and the Fool, believing her dead, embark on a mission of revenge that will take them to the distant island where the Servants reside--a place the Fool once called home and later called prison. It was a hell the Fool escaped, maimed and blinded, swearing never to return. For all his injuries, however, the Fool is not as helpless as he seems. He is a dreamer too, able to shape the future. And though Fitz is no longer the peerless assassin of his youth, he remains a man to be reckoned with--deadly with blades and poison, and adept in Farseer magic. And their goal is simple: to make sure not a single Servant survives their scourge. PRAISE FOR ROBIN HOBB Fool's Assassin "Hobb knows the complicated workings of the wayward human heart, and she takes time to depict them in her tale, to tell her story sweetly, insistently, compellingly. A book meant to be inhabited rather than run through."--The Seattle Times "[Hobb's] prose sparkles, her characters leap off the page."--Tor.com "Fantastic. emotionally rich storytelling."--Library Journal (starred review) Fool's Quest "A complex tapestry of adventure, betrayal, destiny, and unrelenting peril. Hobb's expertise is evident as always."--Publishers Weekly "Glorious and beautiful storytelling. Hobb lets rip with revelations, treachery, vengeance, sword fights and full on magical mayhem."--SciFiNow "If readers have any doubt that Robin Hobb is one of the finest writers in the fantasy genre, then they haven't read any of her work."--SFFWorld"-- "The epic conclusion of the Fitz and the Fool trilogy. In their continuing quest to save Fitz's daughter Bee, and destroy the sinister order that threatens her, Fitz and the Fool must not only face their most difficult challenges yet, but also come to terms with the unanswered questions of their pasts"--… (mer)

Some good dialogue between the characters, but seriously poor overall.

The narrative was feebly constructed, and events seemed to occur mostly as a vehicle for fitting in as many series cameos as possible even though it made little sense for those people to be there half the time.

Hobb routinely did multiple bait and switches (they're dead! Oh no they're not. Yes they are! Nope, just kidding. For real this time!) to the point of tedium, even apathy. I no longer really cared if they'd died or not at the end.

The actions weren't thought through. For example, Fitz spends the latter two books convincing Fool to embark on a certain course of action, which they agree on multiple times is the right thing to do, and is set up to be so; this is reversed in the last moment by one line of dialogue from Bee. I almost think Hobb changed her mind last minute.

So many things were like that. The book feels unfinished, rough second draft stage, perhaps in need of a good edit. As a long term fan who found the original series influential, I was extremely disappointed. ( )

I received a free ARC through Netgalley.com in exchange for a review.

Wow. Doesn't seem like twenty years ago when I first came across Robin Hobb's first book, Assassin's Apprentice, and I haven't missed any books over the handful of trilogies based in this world. So, one more time I have fallen back into Fitz's story....

Possible spoilers ahead - 'Ware!

As the third book in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, the story continues with Fitz and the Fool and a few companions are in the belief his daughter Bee is dead. That being the case, they plan on assassinating the Servants, all of them, in vengeance. At the same time, Bee who is alive is trying to escape her kidnappers. In the long-short of it, both parties are headed to island of the Servants.

Without too many spoilers, Fitz finds Bee, and in the escape Fitz is left behind and the whole party of companions leave. Having left Fitz to die (he was pinned under debris and told them to go) the group travels back home, not knowing Fitz has actually survived (details you will have to read).

Ok ... enough of the story as I don't want to share how it ended....

Wow. I truly did tear up a bit towards the end of the story. Probably about where Fitz is trapped and left behind ... and then later when what happens, happens. I don't think a story has moved me as much as this one has, with me feeling so much for a character. Robin Hobb has done an immaculate job in creating this world and her characters! I hope to see more stories in this world-setting, and am hoping Hobb will continue the story of Bee, Nettle, and other characters. ( )

Bee has been abducted and taken to Clerres where the Servants see her both as a great threat and an opportunity, but don't exactly know what she is. Fitz, the Fool and their companions are intent not only on rescuing Bee, but on bringing down the entire edifice that the Servants have cruelly created for centuries. It is extremely perilous, and not all of them are likely to survive.

This is the very final book of 16 volumes on the adventures of the Fool and the Assassin. At times it is very good, even riveting, and there is a poignant ending that, sort of, ties various strands together. It also does become a little manipulative and a little long-winded at times, as with many of the books, but is definitely one of the very strongest in the series too. ( )

I hate to see this series come to and end - particularly the ending that Robin chose for this one. It's a god book and if you have read any of this series or the related series about Liveships and the Rain Wilds you will find a lot of familiar territory in this epic conclusion. ( )
