It was neat to see them all working together and have some girl-on-girl conflict that wasn't just a catty argument or a boy related problem but was based on a conflict of interests caused by both girls' arcs and backgrounds. ( )

Raven Xingtao, a/k/a the legendary Black Arrow, daughter of the Pirate King, raised her to be a warrior, finds herself in a very disappointing situation. She’s been locked in a tower for three months. Fortunately, someone who can really relate to her situation happens to swoop by on her dragon. Princess Adrienne—no stranger to breaking out of towers and patriarchal expectations of feminine behavior—along with her sidekick, the very tall dwarf Bedelia, and her dragon Sparky come to lend the Black Arrow a sword and hammer, then join her on her vendetta against her double-crossing brothers.

There’s lots of colorful action and adventure as the two princesses battle their adversaries, and vie with each other for the alpha female position of their small band.

The story somewhat moves away from the idea of the Princess who rescues her sisters, instead adding another kickass character in the pirate princess, whose younger brothers have mutinied and had her stuck in a tower. More random fight scenes, and a touching farewell. ( )
