Sometimes you simply just need a book that short and effective. However, most of the time these books do not pair with the phrase "well written". Well, let me tell you, Every Heart a Doorway is an exception to that! I really loved this story and fell in love with the characters and their worlds. McGuire writes in a way that is subtle yet nuanced and allows readers to absorb every ounce of information put forward. What happens to children after they return from their trip through a portal into a magical land? Can life ever return to normal? Do they want it to? Nancy has been sent to a special boarding school by her parents who believe that she is delusional. But the school is not quite what it seems, and when a body turns up, everyone's life may be in peril. Clever and magical, this novella speaks to the longings within us all. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children. No Solicitations. No Visitors. No Quests. Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere...else. But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children. Nancy tumbled once, but now she's back. The things she's experienced...they change a person. The children under Miss West's care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world. But Nancy's arrival marks a change at the Home. There's a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it's up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of things. No matter the cost. Unfortunately, that was all that was good with this one. There are underlying themes of relativism, the tone is rather dark, the profanity and sexual references were unnecessary, and I figured out the ending very early on.
This actually reminded me a lot of [b:The Magicians|6101718|The Magicians (The Magicians #1)|Lev Grossman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1313772941s/6101718.jpg|6278977], another book I gave only 1 star. (
