George lives on Cape Cod with his family and dog Bart. Lester and his parents moved to Cape Cod from Denver with their dog Bill Gates. George misses his best friend Kyra who moved to North Carolina. Lester misses Denver. Eventually George and Lester become friends and conduct the same experiment with their dogs, to determine if the dogs seem to know they are coming home from school. George corresponds with Rupert Sheldrake (a real-life biologist and co-author of this book), asking questions about science, animals, instinct, and telepathy. During the scientific process, both boys make a few personal discoveries about life, faith, and questions that cannot be answered.
