Bears belong in the woods--they can find everything they need to survive there. But what happens when people start knocking down trees and building houses where the woods used to be? This young black bear is about to find out. He wakes one spring to find his territory completely changed. When the curious bear dares to come closer and closer to the houses, he discovers backyards and trashcans are an easy place to find food. But it's dangerous for people and bears to live so close together. What will happen when the bear is discovered right in someone's backyard?… (mer)

A black bear is left alone to fend for himself once his mother leaves him. His home is being destroyed by tractor and people building houses in the once forest. The black bear soon learns that these houses are so bad because they have delicious food. When he is reported to animal control, the bear is taken to a new forest where it is safe for him to live without endangering himself or others.

This story was really short and simple. It gave a few facts about black bears but mainly focused on telling a story. This book was placed in the non-fiction section of the library but does contain fictional parts. This book would be good to read to lower level grades. It would be helpful if the students were learning about bears in particular in the class. ( )

Halsey's illustrations are lovely and simple, and maintains a little bit of the bears cuddliness without overly anthropomorphizing him. The outcome is probably a little bit happier and more optimistic that the reality of these situations ofter are.

A good book to help teach students about the environment and how our actions directly affect all the living things in our world. It is also useful in teaching aspects of bears behavior. ( )
