John Raleigh, one of the youngest and most talented magical healers in all of Anglia, can relieve any ailment except, perhaps, his own broken heart. Since the deaths of his mother and sister who burned at the stake for witchcraft, John has spent his nights lost in nightmares and his days drowning in melancholy. That is until he's summoned to the home of Nicholas Perevil, the most powerful wizard in the kingdom, who suffers from a mysterious illness that has confounded every other healer.
John immediately knows that this is no normal sickness. Nicholas, it seems, is falling apart because of a dangerous curse, and their only clue for a cure is a single nameâ??Elizabeth Grey.
Who is this girl and how has she become mixed up with such dark magic? John must put these questions aside when Elizabeth is brought to him from the palace's prison on the brink of death. I’m a fan of The Witch Hunter, so I was really excited when I stumbled across The Healer this week. I absolutely love prequels and short stories that are part of a series. They almost always enhance my reading experience and if you don’t read the short stories/novellas that are associated with your favorite series, you’re missing out.

The Healer is written from John’s point of view and starts just before Elizabeth’s story in The Witch Hunter. I enjoyed his perspective on what the heck was going on with Nicholas. I can’t forget to mention his reactions to Elizabeth. Frankly, The Healer made me love John and I already liked him before reading it.

Since I liked John in The Witch Hunter, I was not opposed to a short story focusing on him. He didn’t get fleshed out the same way Elizabeth did, but that’s to be expected with the first book in a series. The Healer definitely gives you more history on John and I loved every second of it.

I really enjoyed reading The Healer. It was a short, quick read and my only complaint is that I wanted it to be longer (but that’s not exactly a book criticism). If you’ve already read The Witch Hunter, I would recommend The Healer. If you haven’t picked The Witch Hunter up yet, I would still recommend The Healer (it can be read as a prequel) unless you loathe books with witchcraft.
