A revolution brewing for generations has begun in fire. It will end in blood. The Free Navy - a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships - has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them. James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone. Outnumbered and outgunned, the embattled remnants of the old political powers call on the Rocinante for a desperate mission to reach Medina Station at the heart of the gate network. But the new alliances are as flawed as the old, and the struggle for power has only just begun. As the chaos grows, an alien mystery deepens. Pirate fleets, mutiny and betrayal may be the least of the Rocinante's problems. And in the uncanny spaces past the ring gates, the choices of a few damaged and desperate people may determine the fate of more than just humanity.… (mer)

Thanks to my local library for another great listen in this series! There was a lot of action and fighting going on here, with Marco and the free Navy contingent. It seems like this should have been more exciting than it was, hence the 4star rating instead of the usual 5.

Avasarala is here, and I was very happy about that, because she's one of my favorite characters.

I'm looking forward to the next installment in the series! ( ( )

It just keeps going! The scope of this sci-fi series is remarkable, while it stays carefully focused on our protagonists. Looking forward to the next volume, sitting on my shelf. ( )

Babylon’s Ashes did a nice job of finalizing the major events from Nemesis Games, and left me with a sense of poetic hope in the form of Tolstoy.

In this 6th book, we spend a lot of time in the heads of Filip Inaros, Michio Pa, and Holden and crew, and there were some unexpected endings to some of the characters which fell a little flat for me. We also get snapshots of some of the folks we haven’t seen in a while—Anna back on earth, and Prax. And we play around in Marco’s head.

Avasarala is her riotous self; Bobbie, Alex, and Amos are in top form; Clarissa is getting settled, and Naomi still struggles with her feelings of failure as a mother to Filip and her responsibility to do good by humanity.

This book had some action-packed space battle scenes, but it felt more like a book 5 wrap-up and subsequent setup for the ongoing conflicts in the next one. Looking forward to it! ( )

This is the first two-star review I've ever written. Normally I don't even finish a book that's this bad, but I trusted the authors given everything else in the series has been excellent, even if it was sometimes a little slow to reel me in.

But no. It never got better. There were WAY too many POV's -- sometimes a scene would even break in the middle so we could get it from TWO points of view, repeating a lot of material. There was a TON of introspection, not about any one theme, just ... whatever each person happened to be thinking about. A lot of the POVs were bad guys, so half the time I was confused about what they were even doing, and the rest served to remove any suspense. There was no mystery because we always knew what the bad guys were up to!

And with all that scattered stuff going on, there was no single plot or any real character arc. We follow Filip a bit, but Filip has almost no agency throughout the book. I think he makes one choice, in one chapter, and the rest is him watching Marco do stuff or just thinking and being angsty. Holden, of course, continues to be boring. The gold of this series has always been the supporting characters, but we don't really focus on any of them enough to invest in what's going on with them. Couldn't they have, JUST ONCE, given Holden a rest and focused on somebody else? Maybe spend enough time with Pa to be able to tell her crowd of spouses apart? More Naomi doing something other than be the voice of Holden's superego?

I feel like one of the authors must have napped through the writing of this book. Or else they came up with 100 pages of plot but felt bad not matching the length of their other books, so they inflated it with a lot of junk. It was boring and took me ages to get through.

Am I still going to read the next one? Of course I am. But if they're not back on their A game, I might not be able to get through it. ( )

The previous book was an amazing action filled joy ride, while this one was a good follow up book. You can't really top this, at some point you need to conclude the story ark.

It was well done, but I couldn't help myself to feel a bit let down, just a bit too much stereotypes, etc.

Especially where the story will go on from here, there was no open point at the end where a big story could continue. There are of course a lot of small things going on and we will see what happens in the next book.

Verdict, solid but not outstanding. ( )
