This YA novel from New York Times bestselling author A. G. Howard marks the beginning of a new era for fans of the Splintered series. Rune Germain moves to a boarding school outside of Paris, only to discover that at this opera-house-turned-music-conservatory, phantoms really do exist. RoseBlood is a Phantom of the Operaâ??inspired retelling in which Rune's biggest talentâ??her voiceâ??is also her biggest curse. Fans of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and the Splintered series will find themselves captivated by this pulse-pounding spin on a classic tale.

Rune, whose voice has been compared to that of an angel, has a mysterious affliction linked to her talent that leaves her sick and drained at the end of every performance. Convinced creative direction will cure her, her mother ships her off to a French boarding school for the arts, rumored to have a haunted past.

Shortly after arriving at RoseBlood conservatory, Rune starts to believe something otherworldly is indeed afoot. The mystery boy she's seen frequenting the graveyard beside the opera house doesn't have any classes at the school, and vanishes almost as quickly as he appears. When Rune begins to develop a secret friendship with the elusive Thorn, who dresses in clothing straight out of the 19th century, she realizes that in his presence she feels cured. Thorn may be falling for Rune, but the phantom haunting RoseBlood wants her for a very specific and dangerous purpose. As their love continues to grow, Thorn is faced with an impossible choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or save her and face the wrath of the phantom, the only father he's ever known.

A. G. Howard brings the romantic storytelling that Splintered fans adore to Franceâ??and an entirely new world filled with lavish romance and intrigueâ??in a retelling inspired by a story that has captivated generations. Fans of both the Phantom of the Opera musical and novel, as well as YA retellings such as Marissa Meyer's Cinder, will devour Rose… (mer)

Terrible retelling, couldn't relate to the main character. She felt like an ungrateful brat. Hard to follow the story line. ( )

For someone who has loved the Phantom of the Opera since she was in Kindergarten (yes you read right), anything related to the masked man of the night naturally draws me in. I loved A.G Howards previous splintered book series set in wonderland, so when I saw she was releasing a Phantom themed book my heart skipped a beat.
Upon reading many of the reviews I am a tad surprised at how many low ratings this book received. Perhaps it's the fact that many like myself are ‘Phan’s’ and thus expected something that resonated more with the original Gaston Leroux novel. However, with that being said I appreciated this book for what it was, a remix. A new story interwoven with elements of previous versions. Was there sections that made me scratch my head in a perplexed manor, sure. Overall thou, I enjoyed it. I enjoyed getting to see someone else's imagination take the original concepts and move forward into a ‘what-if’ wonderland (pun intended).
If your going into the book thinking it needs to be following the original guise of Andrew Lloyd Webber or even Gaston than you maybe disappointed. Going into it with an open mind I feel is key. Howard does a lovely job bringing to life wonderful worlds where the imagination can soar. ( )

I try to express only my most honest opinion in a spoiler-free way. Unfortunately, there is still always a risk of slight spoilers despite my best efforts. If you feel something in my review is a spoiler please let me know. Thank you.

Rune is going to a special school in an opera house in France because of her voice. A voice she can't control at all, and her voice scares her. Being obsessed with the book The Phantom of the Opera, the school reminds her of the story. She even sees a man half-hidden and shrouded in mystery.

Thorn sees her and feels their connection. He knows what he wants, but his loyalty to his father calls him to do what he feels he must instead of what he knows is right. Everything is called into question as his feelings for Rune grow and as he learns more and more about the past and present.

~One of my favorite authors
~The romance is steamy
~Was entertaining

Dislikes:
~Took way to long to get into
~Did grab my interest throughout the book
~To much of that "special snowflake"
~Romance was 'fated to be'

So I did like the story. It took me forever to get into it, but once I did it was good and entertaining. But even so it never really grabbed me. It was good while I read it, but a bit forgettable when I wasn't. It just took me far too long to finish. I really love the Splintered series by A.G. Howard. One of my absolute favorites. So this book is really a bit of a let down after that.

This whole story is centered around her specialness and a fated relationship. I don't know if it's just cause I'm getting older and so becoming more of a realist. But I feel this romance would have been so much better if it was one born of real feelings, the kind you have to work and nurture to make bloom. Not one that is just bound to happen.

I think it's worth reading but I certainly doubt I'd ever reread this one. I never knew the original story of The Phantom of the Opera, so I can't compare it in any way. Still, I'm hoping to see a lot more by this author as I know for a fact she has the potential to write a story and romance that will blow my mind, even if this one was just not one of them. ( )

I - had words for this book - and my husband had to sit there and just listen to me rage lol

I didn't mind the last portion of the book but this one, though beautifully written, had strange coloured text, which I DESPISED, and was slow, agonizing in some areas, but alas.... did I hate it, no.

Oh Thorn and his adorableness was just... I couldn't help but fall for that character so I guess that's the point - I did enjoy reading mostly his parts of the book, her parts were meh for the most part. I really loved the cat too - I'm a sucker for pets in books!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Overall not bad ! ( )
