Disguised as a highwayman, Jack Carstares, the wrongly disgraced Earl of Wyncham, found himself again face-to-face with the wicked Duke of Andover. This time the Black Moth was attempting to abduct dark-haired beauty Diana Beauleigh. Once more Jack's noble impulse to save the day landed him in trouble, but not before sending the villainous duke scurrying. Diana took her gallant rescuer in and nursed his wounds, and soon truer emotions grew between them. But Jack couldn't stay, for a lady and an outlaw would make a scandalous pair. Torn between his tarnished past and the hope for Diana's hand, Jack had one dangerous chance to reclaim his honor--by defeating the Black Moth for good!… (mer)

The debut novel by the author written when she was 19 (my buddy read told me. = D) I enjoyed it it and look forward to reading more by Ms. Heyer.
I did not like a single member of the Belmanoir family-- they were each selfish, greedy, self-centered and absorbed, and lived only to be entertained and blow money. I felt especially bad for Jack Carstares for having to live in exile as an outcast for something he didn't do, and I was glad that his brother finally acted like a man and owned up to his guilt and publicly proclaimed his brother's innocence. I was relieved there was an happy ending for Jack. ( )

This may be Heyer's first book, but the evidence of her writing ability is certainly on display. There were at least a few times when I actually laughed out loud. Good fun. ( )

I read a lot of Georgette Heyer back in my youth but I missed this one. Apparently, it was her first book. I could see a lot of These Old Shades here, and in doing some googling found this was sort of a precursor to that wonderful book - she changed names: Satanas, Duke of Avon, is Devil, the Duke of Andover here, and so on. The Black Moth has some of the elements that made the later book so great but is a bit over the top and very melodramatic.
Jack Carstares is the disgraced Earl of Wyncham and now a half-hearted highwayman. He rescues Diana Beauleigh from the Duke of Andover's abduction but is wounded. It's a good read, just not as strong as her later books. I give it 3 1/2 stars. ( )

"The Black Moth" by Georgette Heyer was of course light and fluffy. Jack has given up his rightful place in society as Earl after taking the fall for his brother's cheating at cards. He becomes an outlaw, a highwayman. But then he falls in love with Diana, and he knows he cannot marry her because of his shameful situation. Diana doesn't care, but Jack won't let her throw away her life on a scoundrel like him. Of course everything works out in the end and Jack gets to play the hero and rescue Diana from peril and the whole truth comes out about how he sacrificed for his brother. She's so much fun. ( )

4* for the audiobook edition (January 2018). Julian Rhind-Tutt does a marvelous narration.

A prodigious fun book! However, this Georgian romance, set in the 1750s, shows Heyer's youth and is missing the humor and more realistic situations of her later work. ( )

Clad in his customary black and silver, with raven hair unpowdered and elaborately dressed, diamonds on his fingers and in his cravat, Hugh Tracy Clare Belmanoir, Duke of Andover, sat at the escritoire in the library of his town house, writing.
