Hue boy may be the smallest boy in his village, but he's big news - everyone has suggestions from pumpkin soup to special baths for making him grow.

Set in a Caribbean village, heart warming story, about a boy who is short. All the villagers have ideas on how he can grow taller, but nothing seems to work. Story told in a light hearted manner. ( )

Review: Everyone in little Hue Boy's island village has suggestions on how to help him grow, but he learns to stand tall in a way all his own.
Genre: Realistic Fiction
Critique: This story is not necessarily realistic within America, but it is realistic fiction for this island village. This is real island culture, and although the setting and some of the characters (like the wise man or the healer) are not common here, they are within this culture. The boy goes through true emotions when feeling small and when finally again getting to see his father. ( )

This book felt a bit disjointed to me. I was expecting the end result to be a story about how some people are different and that is ok, but then the final illustration seems to indicate that Hue Boy starts growing. The illustrations were great, I loved the bright highlights the artist used. I'm not sure I would use this book in a school or library program, but if I did it would probably be to talk about the hurtful nature of teasing and bullying and about accepting peoples differences. This book is about a boy who lives in another country who feels like he is not growing tall enough. Compared to his friends he is short, bu he tries to find many different ways to make himself grow taller, quicker.

I like this book because it will help students focus on how individually they are different and learn to realize that being different is a good thing and that is what makes a person an individual.

I would relate this to the classroom by pairing students up with another student and let the m explain their differences and why that makes that particular student special. ( )
