It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco, the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war -- and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.

The book read well as it progressed, but I was disappointed by the climax and resolution. It felt less impactful than it should have been. The stories didn't tie together as closely as I'd wanted, and the overall message didn't land for me.

I'm surprised to be enjoying the Amazon TV series more than the book. ( )

I have conflicting feelings about this one. On the one hand, the idea of an alternate history where Germany and Japan rule the US (and the world) is absolutely fascinating. But, on the other hand, the narrative doesn't really go anywhere. It holds a lot of promise, though, but ultimately, it does not lead anywhere convincing.

For example, the story of Childan and Kasoura - the idea of 'American antiquities' was interesting, and the way Dick explores it was fun. I also enjoyed how Childan's character highlighted the racial and socioeconomic tensions between the Japanese and Americans. There is catharsis near the end, especially with Childan's realization of what he must do, and yet, it doesn't feel quite as satisfying because there is no ending.

Baynes and Tagomi's characters, as well, go through compelling character arcs. Tagomi's progress is philosophical; the quandary he faces at the end was beautifully done. Bayne's is a political story - his involvement in his country's political upheavals was engaging, especially if you're aware of the major historical players. Sadly, their stories feel part of an ongoing narrative and don't end at fulfilling places.

And then there's Mr. and Mrs. Frink. The former's story felt rather tacked on for some reason - it starts nowhere, ends nowhere. Perhaps there's a bit of narrative fate thrown in there somewhere. Still, once the book ended, I wondered how unnecessary his storyline was, notwithstanding the jewelry, of course. Juliana Frink, meanwhile, was more engaging to read, mostly because of the assassin. Her encounter with Abendsen was gripping, too, though it took me a bit to decipher what it meant.

Ultimately, it boils down to philosophy and the message Dick wanted to convey. The oracle and spiritual aspects of the book were thought-provoking, especially in creating meaning and belief in everyday life. And maybe that's the point. Each of the characters completes their arcs finding some meaning and purpose behind their existence, with the ending making their choices clear, albeit leaving the story in a place that needs continuation. Another book I would have never read if not for my book club, especially because I don’t really enjoy narratives where the Nazis win. And being such an old book, I had some trouble understanding the writing style and sometimes even the vocabulary, and I feel like a lot of the meta commentary and philosophizing went way above my head. I also didn’t care much for any of the characters to feel invested in.

I still thought it might have a good ending that would make it worth my effort but that conclusion just blew my mind because I did not understand a single thing about what actually happened. What the f was that???? Just makes it feel like all the time I spent reading was pointless.

If you enjoy reading older books and award winners, then this might be for you. But like me, if you are more into modern writing styles and more accessible storytelling, I wouldn’t recommend picking this one. ( )

Dick is entertaining us about reality and madness, time and death, sin and salvation.... We have our own homegrown Borges.

They know a million tricks, those novelists...Appeals to the base lusts that hide in everyone no matter how respectable on the surface. Yes, the novelist knows humanity how worthless they are, ruled by their testicles, swayed by cowardice, selling out every cause because of their greed...all he's got to do is thump on the drum, and there's the response. And he laughing of course, behind his hand at the effect he gets. (p. 128)
At six-fifteen in the evening she finished the book. I wonder if Joe got to the end of it? she wondered. There's so much more in it than he understood. What is it Abendsen wanted to say? Nothing about his make-believe world. Am I the only one who knows? I'll bet I am; nobody else really understands Grasshopper but me - they just imagine they do.
