An instantNew York Times Bestseller! Fate and fortune. Power and passion. What does it take to be the queen of a kingdom when you're only seventeen? Maya is cursed. With a horoscope that promises a marriage of Death and Destruction, she has earned only the scorn and fear of her father's kingdom. Content to follow more scholarly pursuits, her whole world is torn apart when her father, the Raja, arranges a wedding of political convenience to quell outside rebellions. Soon Maya becomes the queen of Akaran and wife of Amar. Neither roles are what she expected: As Akaran's queen, she finds her voice and power. As Amar's wife, she finds something else entirely: Compassion. Protection. Desire... But Akaran has its own secrets -- thousands of locked doors, gardens of glass, and a tree that bears memories instead of fruit. Soon, Maya suspects her life is in danger. Yet who, besides her husband, can she trust? With the fate of the human and Otherworldly realms hanging in the balance, Maya must unravel an ancient mystery that spans reincarnated lives to save those she loves the most. . .including herself. 3.5 Stars

I really enjoyed this writing style. I've never really read anything like this and actually surprised myself by loving it!

The only thing about this book that I didn't necessarily like was that it felt a little rushed. I dunno, I can't explain how I feel about it, it just seemed to jump rather suddenly from event to event. I wanted to see more of the Night Bazaar and Amar's palace. Even more of Amar and other characters to really get a feel for them.

The world building that did happen coupled with the superb writing was fantastic. I immersed myself in it, I just wanted more!

And can we talk about Kamala. She is the greatest, my favourite character in the entire book. She was all teeth and riddles and fire. I enjoyed her immensely.

Overall I really did enjoy this and I'm excited to read the companion novel and see how it goes ( )

I adored this book - some of it was a bit confusing so hence the 4 stars, but other than that this was a great book.

I adored the horse that took her back in the end - for real, I could listen (I listened to the audio version - it was awesome) to her talk all day, a whole book one her would be awesome, not even an exaggeration on that one. Her sing-song ways and mannerisms are just fabulous.

I'm unsure how to literally spell ANYTHING because I listened to audio, but the world was fun, I can't wait to listen to the second book - I really enjoyed her husband, even though their story was off to a rocky start, I can't wait to see where they end up and how their realm develops. ( )

Okay ya'll, it takes a lot to make me gush about a book. The last time I was this excited about a book was when I read "Cinder" for the first time. "The Star-Touched Queen" had some pacing problems here and there, but not enough for me to rate it below 5 stars.

The book begins with 16 year old Princess Mayavati also known as Maya, doing her best to listen in on one of her father's (The Raja) meetings. Maya, is ostracized by members of her father's harem for causing her mother's death and being unlucky due to her horoscope which promises death and destruction.

When Maya finds that she is to be a sacrificial lamb in a wedding that will stop more war in her country, she is offered a choice of swallowing poison or fleeing and marrying a man who suddenly appears that is called Amar. Amar is the King of Akaran and promises Maya independence and the ability to be who she is meant to be.

Can I just say how happy I am that we have a Young Adult book that features an Indian protagnist. That the whole book takes place in India and touches upon India culture and myth as well as does some great callbacks to parts of Greek mythology too.

Maya is the best. Headstrong and intelligent, we find out that even her father the Raja realized that she is something different than the other wives and daughters he has fathered. That's not to say you won't want to shake her sometimes. Because seriously, she has the worse judgement ever. I think at one point I groaned and said, "Come on, be smarter!" I got it though, when you are treated terribly your whole life (and we are only given glimpses of some of the things she has endured) it makes one twitchy about who they should trust.

The character of Amar we find out about bit by bit. If anyone has read any Greek mythology though, you have to have a good idea of who Amar is and what the kingdom or Akaran is exactly.

We have some secondary characters such as the Raja, Maya's half sister, her half brother, a demon horse, and others that I really did enjoy. I wish that we could read more about what becomes of Maya's sister since that seems like that is going to be another epic tale. I just wish that we had more time with everyone that we are introduced to.

I really loved the writing. A lot of the writing refers to Indian mythology and also it includes quite about the Indian culture (give me more).

I was already familiar with some terms and also some aspect of Hinduism and the caste system, reincarnation, etc. I personally don't know if that is going to hamper some readers or not. I think most people like to stick with what they know, but I would say that there is a reason that your tablet has a dictionary attached to it (smile) use it to look up any unfamiliar words that you want to know more about. I even had to do that a few times, and also Googled a few things here and there too. For me, that's the best part of this book, it opens you up to something that you may not know much about.

I did mention that the flow was a little off here and there, but that was about it. The book only started to drag in the middle, and after we get to the last part of the book, it goes quite fast.

The setting of India is not one that I have had the pleasure to read much of in books these days and I welcomed it. Ms. Chokshi perfectly describes the palace in which Maya grows up, the kingdom of Akaran, the Night Baazar, and other locations. I also love how we are given glimpses into what everyone looks like by how Ms. Chokshi describes them and the clothes they were as well.

I really enjoyed the ending, and only hope that we get another chance to revisit The Star-Touched Queen in the future. ( )
