Edward is the King of England. He's also dying, which is inconvenient, as he's only sixteen and he'd rather be planning his first kiss than who will inherit his crown. Jane, Edward's cousin, is far more interested in books than romance. Unfortunately, Edward has arranged to marry her off to Gifford secure the line of succession. And Gifford is, well, a horse. That is, he is an Eðian (eth-y-un, for the uninitiated) who becomes a chestnut steed every morning, but wakes as a man at dusk, with a mouthful of hay. Very undignified. The plot thickens as the three are drawn into a dangerous conspiracy, and have to engage in some conspiring of their own. But can they pull off their plan before it's off with their heads?… (mer)

This book entertained the heck out of me. It was a light, though long read and I chuckled out loud on more than one occasion. This is the kind of historical fiction I can get behind. It told a story, it was not at all dry or super serious and there was a bit of romance, a bit of humor, a bit of fighting and a whole lot of fun. Can't wait to see what these authors come up with next for the series. ( )

Okay so you know Jane who got beheaded? And the divides between the Catholic Church and (my history is a bit rusty) the Lutherans? well, just throw that all out the window because this witty, magical tale of the Lady Jane Grey will tell you all what really happened all those years ago. All the stuff historians are trying to cover up.

This was awesome the first time I read it and awesoem this time. It's funny, in the laugh-out-loud type way, and one of the few books that I actually laughed out at. The characters were lovable, the authors' voices were seamless and unique. They managed to keep the ideals of the characters in the time period, yet also make them forwards thinking.

I just love everything about this book. ( )

This book is much weirder than I was expecting. The blurb makes it sound like a funny bit of revisionist history, but leaves out the fact that some of the characters have magic that lets them turn into animals, and this magic ends up being a major part of the story.

I think that’s a big selling point (or turnoff, if you don’t like fantasy for some reason), so I’m surprised that they downplayed it to such a degree.

I’m honestly not sure what actually happened to the historical characters included in the book, but it’s nice to believe that they fell in love and had adventures just like they do here. ( )

I started this book on the plane ride to Albuquerque and finished it on the ride back. This was incredibly fun, though I didn't go into this expecting it to be as anachronistic as it was. Interesting alternate history in which instead of conflicts between Protestants/Catholics, it is a conflict between shape-shifters and their supporters (aka, Protestants) and those who feel those shapeshifters are unnatural and should be killed (aka, Catholics). It's a bit heavy-handed at times in setting the stage and there is considerable suspension of disbelief happening on the part of the reader, particularly regarding the historical background of Europe.

(As an aside, I always have some consternation that many fantastical alternate histories involving known historical figures assume that most everything up to that point still happened as our history dictated it, never mind that the addition of vampires/magic/shape-shifters/elves/etc. would have caused human history to have been thrown off the rails very early on. But I digress.)

The authors focused on Lady Jane Grey, the oft-overlooked queen who sat on the throne for nine days between Edward's death and Mary's usurpation. I didn't know much about her, other than she existed, so I found this what-if look inside Jane's head very interesting. There's not much known about her historically, so many liberties were taken (beyond the obvious). Jane shared the shifting point-of-view narration with her husband, Gifford Dudley, and her royal cousin, King Edward, with interjections from the chatty author-voices.

Fun, fast-paced, and surprisingly grounded in historical fact. I really enjoyed this, and I wasn't expecting to. The anachronisms soon stopped being occasions for eye-rolling, and more an inside joke amongst friends. There were nods, subtle and not so subtle, to Shakespeare, Monty Python, Doctor Who, and many others that I can't recall off the top of my head at the moment.

I was kind of sad to finish the book. I had really grown to love the characters, and wanted to spend more time with them. ( )

A very quick read... and “engaging” for that. But 2-dimensional and rather teenage’y. My personal disappointment in all the ways this book repeatedly failed to deliver can fairly be summed up in 1 word: Donkey.
Ah well. 2 stars. ( )
