Salem was a place near and dear to Jenny Duffy and Samuel Hall -- it was where they'd met on a strange and sinister case. They never dreamed that they'd be called back. That history could repeat itself in a most macabre and terrifying fashion. But, then again, it was Salem at Halloween. Quick & Dirty: An entertaining novella about people who can talk to ghosts.

Opening Sentence: Come to me.

The Review:

All Hallows Eve by Heather Graham is a murder mystery/ghost story that really captured my attention. If you are expecting a love story don’t, these are two established romantic characters. The sex is off page but you can definitely feel the love these two characters have for each other. This is the first Krewe of Hunters story that I have read.

Jenna Duffy and Samuel Hall return to Salem, Massachusetts after Jenna’s cousin finds a dead body. People assume it was a suicide since he was found hanging but after Jenna’s cousin speaks with his ghost, she calls her cousin in to help solve his murder. Also, it is Salem at Halloween so the town is full of tourists and crazy characters.

The Krewe of Hunters work for the FBI and solve some crazy murders and ghost hauntings. I didn’t feel like I was missing anything by reading this story, it just made me interested in reading more. I like ghost stories but I have never once picked up one of these books. Jenna and Sam did constantly refer back to their first case together, another murder mystery in Salem but I don’t think anything was ruined for me if I want to go back and read their story. Each person in the Krewe have their own specific talents and I enjoyed reading about Jenna and Sam’s abilities.

All Hallows Eve was an entertaining read. I really enjoyed the story for what it was. I wasn’t entirely surprised by the outcome. What I did like was that Heather incorporated something I’ve never heard of before, the Boo hag. Apparently it is real, look it up, I did. I always like when an author can surprise me with something I’ve never heard of, especially something that just makes me want to giggle every time the characters mention it. Boo Hag.

I would recommend this story if you want something a little different, it isn’t all just about the romance when characters can speak to the dead. All Hallows Eve was a quick read but I really loved the detail and atmosphere that was created in this story. I really felt like I was a part of the story and in Salem with these characters. After this novella, I would at least pick up the first book in this series.

Notable Scene:

A strange flash of darkness and light.

Near the weeping angel and a worn tombstone stood someone in a black cape. Someone with a red face and body. The boo-hag they’d seen the other night. What would someone in costume be doing at the edge of a forlorn graveyard at this time of day, just looking up at the mortuary? She excused herself and headed down the rocky drive toward the cemetery. She leapt over a few tombstones and wove around ancient sarcophagi. But, when she reached the far side and the forest edge, the boo-hag was gone.

She drew her weapon and called out, “FBI. Get the hell out here, whoever you are.”

She hadn’t really expected a reply, not unless it might come from some holdover partier unsure of where he was from a function the previous night. She moved cautiously into the woods, alert and wary, careful of the leaves and twigs beneath her feet.

And then stopped.

No boo-hag was in sight.

Instead, a woman dangled from a tree limb.
