This book was quite a treat; I enjoyed it very much. The main idea of taking a chance to travel and learn new things about different places was interesting. For this book I would say that I liked the plot, the writing, and the characters the most.
When it comes to the plot, I enjoyed that quite a bit because towards the end of the book, it became informational. It explained all the things that are associated with the west without getting into too much detail that might bore the child reading the book. The details such as bison herds, wagon trains, folks coming for gold, and the pony express, were accurate while revealing just enough about the west to possibly get the children excited to learn more about that topic. It was also interesting to see that the plot of the story led them to somewhere they have never been before, which is a great way of showing children that new things and places aren’t always scary.
The writing of this book was affective because young children that are learning to read absolutely love rhyming books. It makes the book more interesting to read and it also helps the children pronunciate some of the words that they might not know, if it rhymes with a word they do know.
The characters are also something that I enjoyed about this book. Although the characters are not intensely developed they do however serve their purpose and create a laugh or two, when papa gets thrown of Red and into a cactus. The characters appear to be a way to express the information about the West out to the reader, seeing how Uncle Tex is teaching them about the West also, which is completely acceptable for me. I did not expect much background information or details about the characters but they were nicely used throughout the book. ( )
