This little gem by Anthony Camp, Director of the Society of Genealogists (London), contains a consolidated list of the Companions of William the Conqueror & is in effect a synthesized edition of the famous Battle Abbey Roll. It brings together references from all eight recognized versions of the Roll, including those prepared by Wace, Leland, & Holinshed in the Middle Ages, the Dives Roll of the 19th century, & the Falaise Roll of the 20th century. Thus it incorporates all historical versions of the list in a single alphabetical sequence & is itself the most comprehensive version of the Battle Abbey Roll ever compiled. But that is not its only virtue. Controversy has raged for many years over the authenticity of the various versions of the Battle Abbey Roll, & Mr. Camp has taken the opportunity to gather the evidence together & to present it as fa'y & objectively as possible, separating what is known from what is definitely not known. So in addition to compiling a synthesized edition of the Battle Abbey Roll from historical sources, he has included in this work three scholarly papers which discuss the validity of the evidence & form a basis for testing conclusions. Furthermore, he has refined the consolidated Battle Abbey Roll even further, providing (1) in boldface type the names of those persons accepted on good evidence as having been present at ? Battle of Hastings; (2) references to those Companions of William the Conqueror whose names appear in the Domesday Book of 1086; & (3) cross-references from the Roll to the Duchess of Cleveland's three-volume Battle Abbey Roll & Lewis C. Loyd's scholarly Origins of Some Anglo-Norman Families. All of this enhances the "fair & objective" presentation of the synthesized list & increases its usefulness.… (mer)
