Expressed her ways of getting involved in her writing. Often referring to other authors works as her inspiration. Honest discussion about living with bipolar father which surprised me as he owns the dime store, glad she did not glamorize him but made him realistic. Also dealt with a son having mental issues and then losing him. Explains how her 2 marriages turned out. Just did not flow well for me reading it. ( )

rabck from maggiesma; Enjoyable collection of reminiscing by an author I never heard of. Born in the appalachian mountains, where her father ran a "dimestore" (hence the title), she jumps around chapter to chapter, writing about bits and pieces of her life. From her childhood with both parents suffering from mental breakdowns (and she's packed off to different relatives), to how she started writing and inspired others to write. She includes bits of writing gems from other authors that she nurtured or discovered, particularly with the "Southern" voices. ( )

I will remember this a long time...the author's priceless summation of literature: "There are two kinds of plots in fiction: 1) someone takes a trip, and 2) a stranger comes to town." This book is a light, pleasant read. My only complaint: too much name-dropping. ( )

Just could not get interested . . . it was like reading the same sentence over and over . . . no heart, no passion and, although I dislike using this word, boring . . . ( )

I had three books going and admittedly don't multitask well, however this one kept calling me back to read more.

Dimestore isn't a linear or chronological type of memoir but the author does effortlessly blend Appalachian culture and her childhood/adult experiences with the reasons why she became a writer. Although much of the book is filled with the small details of everyday life, it was still interesting. Maybe that is what made the book so engaging? I enjoyed the flow of Lee Smith's writing and appreciated the humor she found in situations that might otherwise be considered bleak. Mental illness within the author's family is a subject touched upon more than once but even that is discussed in an approachable, respectful, albeit sometimes witty manner.

Although I didn't grow up in the south and am of a different generation than the author, I could relate to growing up in a small town where big box stores were slow to be integrated into daily living. It was interesting to consider that had Lee Smith been born under different circumstances or in an urban area, perhaps she wouldn't have become a writer. Since I am not a professional writer, perhaps this review isn't doing the book justice. Essentially, Dimestore was an enjoyable read that came to my attention at the right time. ( )

I was born in a rugged ring of mountains in southwest Virginia - mountains so high, so straight up and down, that the sun didn't even hit our yard until about eleven o'clock.
