The ants make different additive arrays to get to the picnic faster. They rearrange their formation of 100 into smaller and smaller rows.

In this story the littlest Ant tries to get all of his ant friends to move faster to the food by having all 100 ants get into different sized rows. The concept of splitting into smaller groups by using ants trying to get to the leftover picnic was quite darling. However, at the end of the story all of the ants realized that they took up so much time getting into rows that they missed out on all of the food and then they chase after the little Ant. I was quite pleased with the story up until the very end. The little ant worked diligently to get his team organized and was, essentially, attacked at the end of the story. With a different ending that proved the point that things are faster when put into groups this book would have been more useful in the classroom environment. The illustrations, however, were quite lovely. I appreciate their simplicity while at the same time very clearly showing the expressions on the ant’s faces. ( )

This is a funny math book used to teach about division and factoring. This is the story about 100 hundred hungry ants on their way to a picnic. The ants think they are going to slow so they divide their lines to try to get to the picnic faster. They start with two lines of fifty and eventually end with ten lines of ten when they get to the picnic. Sadly when they arrive all the food is gone because they took to long dividing their lines! This is a clever book to teach children. It shows the ants being divided and students are able to see the ants in the lines and count them. This book was a creative way to teach students about division by having a fun concept such as hungry ants. ( )

Happy endings are not always the case when it comes to ants. This book is about 100 ants who need to get to the picnic faster because all of the other animals who are going to take their food. The ants begin to divide their lines into two lines of fifty to get to the picnic faster. Finally when they get down to ten lines of ten they arrive at the picnic and all of the food is gone. This was not the ending I was expecting. However, this is a great way to introduce division and factoring to a young math class. This book is fun and exciting and will totally allow children to feel excitement about reading and math without even realizing it. ( )

I got to actually see my mentor teacher use this book in a second grade classroom. The students really enjoyed it, and it really helped them comprehend how they could count in small groups (5,10,15...)(6,12,18...). I would read this book aloud, and probably do a hands on activity with ant cut outs afterwards, that way students can actually have something that they can recall when they remember the book and the strategies.
