There are only three things that matter to twelve-year-old Alice Alexis Queensmeadow: Mother, who wouldn't miss her; magic and color, which seem to elude her; and Father, who always loved her. The day Father disappears from Ferenwood he takes nothing but a ruler with him. But it's been almost three years since then, and Alice is determined to find him. She loves her father even more than she loves adventure, and she's about to embark on one to find the other. But bringing Father home is no small matter. In order to find him she'll have to travel through the mythical, dangerous land of Furthermore, where down can be up, paper is alive, and left can be both right and very, very wrong. It will take all of Alice's wits (and every limb she's got) to find Father and return home to Ferenwood in one piece. On her quest to find Father, Alice must first find herself--and hold fast to the magic of love in the face of loss.    "Tahereh Mafi is a maestro of words, and Furthermore the most magical painting that ever existed, bursting with color and heart and humanity. This is such a fun book! I could honestly see this world becoming a TV show one day, probably in the same scope of the [b:Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library|16054808|Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library (Mr. Lemoncello's Library #1)|Chris Grabenstein|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1379335670l/16054808._SY75_.jpg|21839952] movie they made. The premise is fairly simple, color is magic and our heroine has no color. The adventure is a little silly (as it should be for the grade level it is written for), but the characters are really fleshed out. One thing I appreciated was how there was no romantic arc to this plot. [a:Tahereh Mafi|4637539|Tahereh Mafi|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/u_50x66-632230dc9882b4352d753eedf9396530.png] writes such great romance/drama books, and I wasn't sure how she would do without that. She did great - it's just what I wanted it to be. Highly recommend :) ( )

I enjoyed this book a lot. As many have said, the writing is very whimsical and pretty and flowing, which I admit, I did not enjoy for the first 30 page. Once I had the time to sit down and read a larger chunk of this story, I enjoyed it a lot more. I have been extremely busy with various work over the last couple of days or I would have finished much more quickly. I read 370 pages of this 400-page book in 2 days. I could tell that this book was more of a middle-grade book, but that didn't take anything away from my enjoyment. I really liked the world building in this world. The premise is basically a uncolorful girl living in a colorful world who has to go on an adventure to another land to find her father with a boy. Even though this is an adventure with a boy and a girl who are 13 and 12 respectively, it really is just about friendship and I didn't view their relationship as romantic. I think the relationships in this book were portrayed very well. It showed how family relationships and friendships can be very complicated. One way I could tell it was more middle grade was because of the fact the morals are hit over your head a little bit, but I don't think it is done poorly. The characters and their relationships sort of had to grow on me but by the end of the story, I was completely sold. The plot was also quite interesting and I found myself really enjoying all the twists and turns as Alice and Oliver traveled through unknown lands as well as Alice in particulars journey of self-discovery. As someone who hasn't read middle grade or whimsical writing in a while, I was definitely able to enjoy this lovely story. ( )

It's probably closer to a 3.5 but there were enough parts of this that I really enjoyed that I decided to lean on the generous end of the scale. The beginning is slow and I found the ending anticlimactic but around the middle when Alice and Oliver separated, I was completely invested. I'd love a book that was about Alice's next journey and I would really love a book that explored Oliver's first year in Furthermore (predictably I loved the character whose power is being able to talk his way in and out of anything). I think if you're a fan of Catherynne M. Valente's Fairyland series or L. Frank Baum's Oz books, you'll enjoy this. If you're not, you'll probably find it a little too twee and confusing. ( )

Alice Alexis Queensmeadow is 12. And that's a very important age in Ferenwood. Soon she will be called to share her magical gift with everyone in her community. Along with all the others her age, she will be rated on her magical skill and given an important task to complete. She hopes she will be tasked to find her father, who disappeared 3 years before taking only a ruler with him. Imagine her surprise when an older boy, Oliver, asks her for help with his task. She dislikes Oliver because he once made fun of her -- pointed out her different appearance in front of everyone at school. Things never seem to go easily, or as planned, for Alice -- and she finds herself forced to travel through the strange and dangerous land of Furthermore to find her father ..... with Oliver.

I listened to the audiobook version of this middle-grade book narrated by Bronson Pinchot. He has a nice voice and reads at an even pace. I have hearing loss, but was easily able to understand and enjoy this audiobook. At just over 8 hours long, it took me a couple days to finish listening. The humor, colorful fantasy and creativity of this story made it very entertaining!

Alice is a delightful main character. She feels different, separated....like she doesn't belong with her family or with anyone. It was sweet seeing her learn that differences can be strengths, and that what she sees as her biggest flaw might just be her greatest asset. Oliver is both a scoundrel and a caring person. His magical gift is both a blessing and a curse it seems. Both Alice and Oliver learn to work together and discover how to forgive, trust and form a friendship.

All in all, a nice, fantastically creative middle-grade story! It touches on some subjects that all children have to learn to deal with -- failure, loss, betrayal, trust, friendship, embarrassment and learning from mistakes. ( )

4.5/5 stars. Will write more later but I just wanted to say I just loved the relationship between Alice and Oliver. These two were definitely my favorite characters. ( )
