An interesting concept, especially the initial development of the omegas, but lacking a whole lot of polish. Choppy dialogue, characters with less animation than the artificially intelligent robots, weak pacing, and typos galore. So frustrating! The omega AI who chooses to call himself 'Jonathan' - who knows why, I preferred his original designation of 1-3 - is the cliched 'bad robot', stropping around like a sulky teenager ('I hate you!'), but Chip is endearing, as is poor 1-2, tasered into submission by a trigger-happy guard. Even Lucas the disembodied AI running the lab has more personality than the human cast. I would call Alison a Mary Sue, except that the author is a guy - she gets thrown into the middle of the Omega project, like Dr Joel on Northern Exposure, but ends up running the show, because the AIs love her (naturally). Apart from her, and the deficiency of a beta reader, Slade raises some good points about artificial intelligence and humanity, and his futuristic world-building is intriguing, if underdeveloped. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
-Updated Edition with editorial modifications and fixes-A creative and intelligent debut by Mike Slade, Omega Children redefines the classical notion of Artificial Intelligence. This page-turner follows former military officer Alison Blair as she adjusts to her new life outside the United Space Force, thrust into a world with scientists and engineers creating the first truly Synthetic Intelligence. The story examines the way cybernetic life could actually be created in a lab, and then tracks their development and maturation as they interact with each other and the society around them. What happens when these beings discover love? Jealousy? Hate? What happens when the Omega Children begin making more and more decisions for themselves. Can they be controlled? All the while the lingering question remains- Are the Omega Children actually alive, or are they simply systems following code? And how are we any different from that? Sadly, the author could not make me suspend my disbelief to live in his world. I'm not sure if it would work for someone who knows less about science and technology, but for me (and I'm no expert) I was yanked out of the story multiple times, aghast at the inaccuracies.
I liked the story itself, and if those elements of story-telling were fixed (along with other editing) this could have gotten at least another star and a half from me. ( )
