Embark on an exciting, adventurous, and dangerous journey through the galaxy with the motley crew of the spaceship Wayfarer in this fun and heart-warming space operaâ??the sequel to the acclaimed The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

Lovelace was once merely a ship's artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has no memory of what came before. As Lovelace learns to negotiate the universe and discover who she is, she makes friends with Pepper, an excitable engineer, who's determined to help her learn and grow.

Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that no matter how vast space is, two people can fill it together.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet introduced readers to the incredible world of Rosemary Harper, a young woman with a restless soul and secrets to keep. When she joined the crew of the Wayfarer, an intergalactic ship, she got more than she bargained forâ??and learned to live with, and love, her rag-tag collection of crewmates.

A Closed and Common Orbit is the stand-alone sequel to that beloved debut novel, and is perfect for fans of Firefly, Joss Whedon, Mass Effect, and Star Wars… (mer)

This was an absolutely beautiful book. While in some ways it felt less cozy than the first book, I don't think it really was; I think that's my reaction to how important the plot of this book was. It's definitely still a cozy—the consequences if the plot goes wrong are very limited in scope. No one will really be impacted except our main characters. But for them, there is so much importance in everything going right that it feels like a much bigger deal. I really enjoyed this one. ( )

This is a side story about Blue and Pepper. It's written much like the first and has a lot of back story about how these two characters (mostly Pepper) developed into the characters they are. There's also quite a bit more detail into the various species we have already met in the previous book. I struggle with calling it a series, because a series denotes a continuation of a story, where this is more backstory and a side story. It's still worth the read if you enjoyed the universe in which the previous book was set. ( )

This series is what Firefly would be if Wheaton was as feminist as he pretended to be. It's a nice vacation from cynicism. Interesting ethical dilemmas with believable situations and fun aliens but without the cynicism or grimdark that this genre is full of. ( )

This was probably closer to 3.5 stars for me. I preferred the first book by a lot. It was just a style thing. I felt like the book took forever to get going and while I loved the characters I never became as invested in the story. ( )

Becky Chambers is the only science-fiction writer I know of, who writes with the premise that people are fundamentally good and compassionate, and I like that very much. Where it was refreshing and nice in the first book however, in this book it got to be a bit much. While people can be compassionate, they are rarely so understanding and good decisionmakers as in this book.
For another thing, Chambers seems to be very good at introductions. In the previous book it was the universe and characters, in this book an introduction of a new sort of character into the world. I would really like to see something more substantial however. So, if these two books are the introductionary tales of a large series that builds up to something, I am very much on board. If, however, the level of depth stays the same in future books, I will be kind of underwhelmed.
Even so, it was a nice story and a very easy read. ( )

Jane let out a sob she hadn't known was there. Oouoh sat up with a start. 'Oh - oh, what the fuck, he said. 'Shit, let's get you to the med ward, come on -'
Jane stared at him, 'What? Why? I'm fine.'
'Uh, no, you're ...your eyes are leaking.'
Jane laughed, which was heard to do while crying. 'No, no, this' she sniffed hard - 'it's just tears. It's okay.'
Oouoh was distraught. 'What about this is okay?'
'We do this. Humans do this when - when we're feeling a lot of things.'
'You leak?'
