Barbara Kinghorn grew up in an eccentric, funny yet tragic family in Johannesburg in the 1950s. Her mother, the Miss McKirdy of the title, taught Scottish country dancing at a Catholic convent school and was determined that her daughters would win all the competitive dancing championships both in South Africa and in Britain, and she drove them relentlessly towards that goal. This a very funny, poignant autobiography and a memorable read. ( )
