A mindbending, relentlessly surprising thriller from the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy. "Are you happy with your life?"   Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.   Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.   Before a man Jason's never met smiles down at him and says, "Welcome back, my friend."    In this world he's woken up to, Jason's life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.   Is it this world or the other that's the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could've imagined--one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.   Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human--a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we'll go to claim the lives we dream of.… (mer)

This novel, about someone who is hurled into the multiverse and is trying to find his way back to his timeline, is a very easy read. Unlike Andy Weir, whose explanations of the technical aspects of his characters' dilemmas make up part of the fascination with his novels, Crouch forgoes all that giving very superficial explanations (or no explanations) as to how the "box" works. It feels very much like a treatment for a movie, which in fact it will be very soon. I expect it will be a blockbuster because the scenes in the different timelines are fascinating and very visual, and the final quarter of the book is very "Matrix"-like. Anyway, nothing earth-shattering, but passable entertainment. ( )

Definitely trippy and was a little hard to get into but once I was I binged it. ( )

Review for "Dark Matter" by Blake Crouch (⭐⭐⭐⭐🌠): I like to read books from various genes, but sci-fi and fantasy are two genres I haven't really explored. This sci-fi book, however, blew me away. I fell in love with the plot, including the stellar characters and the fascinating alternative reality theories. The writing style really brought it all together, captivating me with every turn of the page. The plot slowly built up, leading to shocking reveals, keeping the mystery and intrigue alive until the very end. I recommend this book to anyone interested in either continuing their sci-fi obsession or to those interested in trying something new. ( )

I had a really difficult time getting into this book (possibly because I did the audio version). I found that I did not care much for Jason in the first half of the book particularly while he was mooning over the first alternate Daniella that he met. It did hold my interest for a while in the second half as it felt like an homage to Sliders, one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time, but even that waned by the last quarter of the book.

A couple of things that frustrated me at the end were:
1. What happened to the Amanda that helped Jason1 escape and why did we never run into another alternate version of her again? Certainly at least one version stayed with Jason all the way back to "original" world.
2. Why was there no discussion of the possibility that Jason1 was not actually home but in a branching timeline that split off from his original world after he left? He ran into versions of himself that split after he left and realized that had as much right to his world as he did, but there should thousands of versions of his world that were created after he left by decisions that Jason2 and Daniella made.
3. It was implied that only Jason2 figured out how to create the box, but shouldn't there have been many versions of Jason2 that split off after the creation of the box and therefore many versions of the box?
4. How did the box exist in worlds that it was not created in? The box itself never went into superposition if I understand correctly so it should not have been in the new worlds or at least vanished after depositing them.
5. Why did they never seek out an alternate Ryan Holder to try and replicate the serum so that they could keep going?
6. Crouch never fully addressed why the other Jasons would not follow Jason, Daniella, and Charlie though the multiverse.
7. How was Jason1 not able to ever differentiate between the different Daniellas? I get it being confused about his feelings, but through most of the book he is madly in love with every Daniella he meets regardless of whether it is his wife or not. I feel like after a couple of worlds he would have seen the differences and forced him to accept that not every Daniella is his Daniella.

A few too many issues for me to fully enjoy, but maybe a sequel could resolve some of them? I'd be willing to give it a shot. ( )

I liked the concept of multiverse and enjoyed the consequences. However, I found the pace of the story to be too slow. I expected a thriller to be fast paced.

Jason Dessen gets abducted while coming back to home and finds himself in a changed world after regaining consciousness. His home, his wife, his entire life is different than what he remembers. He struggles to understand what happened.
After realizing that this is not his world, he escapes and enters the cube (which is built by another version of Jason in another world). After many failed attempts he is able to enter his original world, but finds that many other versions of himself have also entered it. He now has to find a way to convince his wife and son and take them to safety.
