I really liked Bel Canto and wanted to like this one if only on the basis of that prior judgment and of a sort of territorial pride (Patchett is a Tennessean too), but this one didn't do a whole lot for me. It was fine. Parts of it were good. As a whole, it just didn't do a whole lot for me, though. ( ![]() It pains me to only give this 3 stars because I enjoy and revere Ann Patchett. This book was probably just as good as her other books, that I love, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm still thinking about it though and that is the test of a good book. I liked everything about this book! Highly recommend it. I had never read anything by Ann Patchett, though I had heard of Bel Canto. When I saw the description, I wasn’t sure I wanted to read Commonwealth: too many books on dysfunctional families are already on the market. But I am so glad I decided to give this one a try. I was able to experience what it is like to be in the hands of a literary master. Every time I picked this book up, I completely lost track of the world around me and fell deeply into the narrative of the story. In brief: one stolen kiss at a Christening party in southern California has far-reaching consequences for two couples and their six children over a period of five decades, causing each of them to redefine the meaning of family. The story is narrated mostly by Franny, the baby whose Christening starts the whole spiral of events. The book goes back in forth in time, and at times it can be challenging to keep track of all the characters – there are six step-siblings whose lives are deeply affected by that simple kiss. Two of the characters divorce their spouses and marry, causing two families to be blended, and not in the best way. This book is kind of a challenge to review because so much happens to the characters, and I don’t want to give too much away. The author manages to tie up each story line in a way that is so very satisfying. The book follows each of the children as they grow up, some overcoming the damage done by their parents’ actions, others struggle their whole lives. I think that many readers will be able to relate to this novel who grew up in blended families. After reading a novel like Commonwealth it’s hard to go on to the next book in your TBR stack without comparing it to the wonder you have just read! Too many different people and their mixed up lives. Each individual section was nicely written but it was confusing when events happened and their order/timeline. Each child carried regrets about events in their lives. Never fully understood why marriages broke up yet stayed intertwined. No character that I could really relate and feel compassion for except Possibly Caroline since she was oldest trying to hold siblings together, their mostly single mothers having trouble staying abreast of so many kids that they weren’t invested in. Breaking up a marriage for attraction although your current marriage was not that bad bothered me.
...spans over 50 years, and the stories of how these children move uncertainly into adulthood — and how their parents adjust to the misfortunes that accrue — are painfully beautiful. (I went from bristling to weeping at 3 a.m.) Escaping the cage of your childhood can be one of the sublime miracles of growing up, though it sometimes requires more tools than the average jailbreak. a compelling novel, full of characters who ring true. Patchett sucker-punches you, but leaves you feeling you had it coming – whether for underestimating her, or her characters, or humanity, is hard to say. In particular, Commonwealth is one of the most discerning novels about siblings I can recall. One pair of stepsiblings share an equivocal bond: “In that sense the two of them had been a team, albeit a team neither one of them wanted to be on.”
"The acclaimed, bestselling author--winner of the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Orange Prize--tells the enthralling story of how an unexpected romantic encounter irrevocably changes two families' lives. One Sunday afternoon in Southern California, Bert Cousins shows up at Franny Keating's christening party uninvited. Before evening falls, he has kissed Franny's mother, Beverly--thus setting in motion the dissolution of their marriages and the joining of two families. Spanning five decades, Commonwealth explores how this chance encounter reverberates through the lives of the four parents and six children involved. Spending summers together in Virginia, the Keating and Cousins children forge a lasting bond that is based on a shared disillusionment with their parents and the strange and genuine affection that grows up between them. When, in her twenties, Franny begins an affair with the legendary author Leon Posen and tells him about her family, the story of her siblings is no longer hers to control. Their childhood becomes the basis for his wildly successful book, ultimately forcing them to come to terms with their losses, their guilt, and the deeply loyal connection they feel for one another. Told with equal measures of humor and heartbreak, Commonwealth is a meditation on inspiration, interpretation, and the ownership of stories. It is a brilliant and tender tale of the far-reaching ties of love and responsibility that bind us together"--
"Commonwealth is the story of two broken families and the paths their lives take over the course of 40 years, through love and marriage, death and divorce, and a dark secret from childhood that lies underneath it all"-- Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |
